Melted Cheese Part 2

Filed under: Sports Resources — admin at 6:50 pm on Sunday, March 30, 2008

Anytime the Vikings beat the Green Bay Packers there’s cause for celebration. Even though the Vikings looked awful for half the game they still looked much better then their arch rival Green Bay Packers.

The Vikings finally scored an offensive touchdown after over 138 minutes of game time.
The Monday Night Footbal crew of John Madden and Al Michaels jumped on the Vikings bandwagon and started complimenting the play of Brad Johnson.

No offense to Johnson but his play has only been adequate.
I guess you could say that Johnson is not making stupid mistakes like throwing many interceptions but he’s not going out and throwing touchdowns either.
Throwing two touchdown passes in his three starts is not good at all.

The defense has played much better in the last two games. They’re not only making interceptions but they’re scoring touchdowns off those interceptions.

While some might say that the Vikings only beat a team coming into the game with a 2-8 record, they beat the Packers at Lambaugh, on the road, on grass and on the road.
The Vikings should be happy with the result but needs to correct the mistakes that they’re still making.

It was really awesome to see the Lambaugh crowd in such sad spirits. The cocky bunch got what they deserved. I think that they’re some of the most obnoxious fans in the NFL.

One Green Bay fan had a sign that showed purple Turkeys in reference to the Vikings and their fans. The problem is that the fan spelled Turkeys as Turkies.
This illiterate person should spend more time in the classroom and less time at the bar…just kidding.

Brett Favre looked like melted Wisconsin cheese, once again. He didn’t look like the so called future Hall of Famer. He looked like an amateur.
Favre has done some great things on the football field in the past but he’s also had some awful games as well.
Favre currently leads the NFL with 17 interceptions.

The Vikings swept the season series this year, leaving cheeseheads to ponder what went wrong this year. The Vikings have won their last two games at Lambaugh and the stadium is starting to feel like the Vikings home away from home.
The way the Vikings won both their games against Green Bay was amazing.
They won both games on last minute field goals by Paul “I can’t kick a 30 yard filed goal but I sure can kick a 40 yard game winner” Edinger.

I guess the bright spot for the Packers is that they’re almost guaranteed a good draft pick.

is that they’re almost guaranteed a good draft pick.

Strawbale Construction Wins Hands Down

Filed under: Hall Of Gardening — admin at 3:56 pm on Sunday, March 30, 2008

A couple friends of ours, Conrad and Carol, are in the process of getting district approval for the construction of their straw bale home. Bedtime stories of little pigs seem to have created skewed views of straw houses as frail little things that topple over when the wind picks up.

Due to a lack of education and enough disinterest to not pick up a book and learn something, city hall here in Salmon Arm is fighting every step of the way. Luckily, Conrad and Carol are armed with an open-minded engineer and a lot of determination.

Straw is an agricultural waste product, much like the soy wax in soy candles. Every year, enough straw is burned in the US to have built 5 million 2,000 square foot homes. Burning straw produces five times as much carbon monoxide as all the hydro power plants in the US. Finding new uses for renewable resources is the key to sustaining our earth.

Straw bale walls, made by stacking bales and covering them with adobe, are generally 2 feet thick and can decrease heating and cooling costs by up to 75%. This also cuts down on emissions. These super-thick walls are very soundproof and very fire resistant.

Burning a straw bale house can be viewed like burning a phonebook - one page or one straw burns quite easily, but a closed book, or bales stacked tightly together will not provide enough oxygen. Cover those bales with adobe and they are very resilient, passing every test with flying colours.

Wood frame homes have hollow walls and go up in flames in no time. These hollow walls also provide a safe haven for bugs and mice, but straw bale is too solid and any holes are completely sealed with adobe plaster.

The walls of a straw bale house actually breath. You have to paint them with a special water-based paint otherwise they will stop breathing and rot inside the plaster from moisture buildup. This air exchange is great if you have allergies - you already have a built in purifier.

If you would like a home that’s a little more creative than square, straw bale can be curved all over the place. If a window is no longer desired in it’s current position, pack the opening full of little straw/adobe loaves called cobs and smooth over with adobe. Then you can break out the chainsaw and cut a new window.

With all these benefits, it’s no wonder straw bale is catching on. If only it were studied a little more closely by the powers that be…

Keep an eye out, we’ll be documenting Conrad and Carol’s trials and triumphs with their own straw bale home.

The Underestimated Power of Kindness

Filed under: Internet Self Improvement Resources — admin at 11:20 am on Sunday, March 30, 2008

It was a bright Saturday morning in the late fall. I had stopped at a cafe’ to enjoy a cup of coffee and scan the morning newspaper. Suddenly, I felt a hand on the back of my jacket and heard someone say, “Hey Steve! How ya doin’?”

Looking up, I saw a boy wearing a mechanic’s uniform worn by employees of the gasoline station next to the cafe’. He looked familiar, but, at first, I was unable to recall where we had met.

He also held a cup of coffee, so I asked him to join me. Very soon, his story–and probably my coffee–began to thaw out my memory.

Five years earlier, he had been traveling home late on a February night. He still had several of his friends with him. A ferocious blizzard had arrived that afternoon, and by midnight, the snowdrifts were getting deep. He recalled hitting a drift just down the road from my house.

He had walked to my house for help. I had taken my pickup and a towing rope and pulled him out of the snowdrift and up to the highway where maintenance trucks had cleaned away the snow.

This has been a common occurrence here during the winter. I cannot count the times someone has also pulled my car from a snowdrift.

However, it was an unforgettable experience for him. He was only eighteen at the time, and he described how frightened he had been. One would not want to be stuck all night in a storm like that one. Within a couple hours, my pickup would not have made it to the highway.

As it turned out, his memory and account of that snowy night was a very unexpected–and much appreciated–kindness toward me. I thanked him sincerely for stopping to chat during his break.

His memory of our unexpected meeting in a snowstorm brightened my entire day. Since then, we have had several chats over a Saturday morning cup of coffee.

Leo Buscaglia wrote, “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”

Such simple actions can indeed have an underestimated power. Many people desperately need kind words, smiles, and listening ears. They need ears that will hear without judging and respond without possessing.

One simple kindness at the right moment can change the direction of a life and shine a light of hope when all light seems to have gone out. Sometimes it has the power to save a life.

Here is a great quote that I keep in my e-journal. It was written by William Penn…

“I expect to pass through life but once. If therefore, there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, let me do it now, and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again.”

Make today a memorable day by sharing a smile or kind word with at least one other person. It is difficult to estimate the tremendous power and value that the simplest acts of kindness bring. However, they do not stop where they begin. Their underestimated power will continue to bring you a life of joy and memorable experiences.

Leadership - L.P.B It!

Filed under: World Of Management — admin at 10:40 am on Sunday, March 30, 2008

“Dissatisfaction and discouragement are not caused by the absence of things, but the absence of vision.”
- Anonymous

This article in for anyone who is currently unsure, unknowing, on-the-fence, and/or otherwise “searching” for the answer to whether or not he/she can be an effective leader.

The answer? Quite simply is: “Maybe” or “Maybe Not”!

No, we are not trying to be funny or in any way make light of the question.

The simple truth of the matter is this. Whether you think you can be an effective leader, OR you think you can’t be - You Are Right!

Just take a moment and think about the original question. “Can I be an effective leader?” We challenge you to ask this question again, but in a slightly different way.

Rather than asking, “Can I …?” - Instead ask: “WILL I be an effective leader?”

Asking the question this way, makes something very clear to the person asking the question. That “something” is that each of us has a choice to make as to what we want to be in any given moment. THE CHOICE IS OURS.

Vision in Leadership is very much about making choices. Leaders make choices everyday that affect many other people. Because of the responsibility and accountability that comes with leadership, a good leader makes choices based on strong principles and beliefs.

Choosing a specific path or vision for your team or your company, is done most effectively by following the L.P.B.-It method.

The title of this article is “L.P.B.-IT! - The Power of Vision”. L.P.B. stands for the following:

L-eave It

P-erceive It

B-elieve It

LEAVE IT! - When faced with an important decision, it is sometimes easy to focus in on all the reasons why we shouldn’t do something versus why we should, or why perhaps it won’t work versus why it will.

Leave It - makes the point that a strong leader routinely makes the choice to “leave” negative thinking behind. There are plenty of nay-sayers who accomplish little or nothing. YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO BE ONE OF THEM.

On a regular basis, step at least “1 inch” outside your comfort zone. That is where all the action is!

In fact, everything you have ever wanted and have thus far been unable to obtain, is more than likely located “outside” this comfort zone.
To be a successful leader, you must be “uncomfortably successful”. Make this choice now!

Perceive It! - A strong leader’s perception is truly a powerful tool. Effective leaders perceive things differently in most cases from others.

For instance, go anywhere in Smalltown, USA or Ruralville, America where Walmart, Costco, Home Depot or some other huge bulk outlet store has just come to town.

Local retailers in these little towns have nightmares about this scenario playing out in their own backyards. The thought of having to compete against Goliath is extremely frightening.

No one would argue the fact that these local retailers have a right to be concerned. But, if our L.P.B.-It method really works, shouldn’t we “leave” these negative thoughts aside? Answer: YES!

The truth of the matter is that no amount of fear is going to change the minds of large chain executives. They will either make the decision to open, or they won’t. If they do choose to expand to these markets, you should know that they are well aware of your fears. In fact, these executives are counting on this fear.

Instead of “perceiving” the bulk stores as the enemy. Why not “perceive” them as an opportunity? YOUR - Ace In The Hole!

Opportunity may come in many forms, but we must seize the moment and perceive the opportunity in order to avoid becoming the victim of circumstance.

Examples of potential opportunities from the above scenario:

- Traffic patterns may change so perhaps a relocation of your business may be great for future growth.

- Land values may rise in certain areas. Buying now and selling later may be a wise investment for an early retirement.

- Increased competition typically increases quality for the consumer. More choices make service and quality more important. Price is not always the deciding factor. Know what your customers’ value most and deliver.

- Identify a niche for positioning your current business, or open a new business that can take advantage of the increased traffic and that can compliment the incoming bulk store.

If you weren’t willing to compete, perhaps your expertise would be more highly valued as a manager or supervisor at the new bulk store. Potential for stock options, increased benefits, new challenges, etc.

The fact is we could go on and on about possible opportunities in virtually any given situation. It’s all based on a person’s perception of any given event.
Perceiving things positively by no means ensures success, but understand this; perceiving things negatively virtually guarantees failure.

Again, it’s a choice, make yours now!

Believe It! - You may have heard the term “Believing is Achieving”.
This is a very simple but powerful phrase that has been proven over and over again. If you think about it, nothing great has ever been achieved until someone has finally comes along with the belief that it should be - and WILL be achieved.

For instance, man first stepped foot on the moon because of a President who firmly believed that we could achieve what many considered impossible.
President Kennedy addressed our nation by saying words to the effect, “some look to the moon and ask why, I look to the moon and ask why not.”

Isn’t it fair to say that President Kennedy’s belief of what could be achieved was very different than the belief of most people? If you agree, you might also concede that it was his strong “belief” that inspired a nation to make the impossible - possible.

In his recent book “Leadership Secrets of Colin Powell” by Oren Harari, he states:

“Perpetual Optimism is a Force Multiplier. The ripple effect of a leader’s enthusiasm and optimism is awesome. So is the impact of cynicism and pessimism.”

The same point can be made for a leader’s strong belief. The power of one’s belief and ability to communicate his/her belief to influence others IS awesome.

In conclusion, the L.P.B.-It method is all about making the appropriate choices in order to carry out your vision for success. Vision = Choice Cubed, if you will!

CHOOSE to leave the self-doubt and “can’t-do” garbage behind you in order to allow new worlds and new beginnings in.

CHOOSE to see opportunity instead of catastrophe.

CHOOSE to believe in the impossible in order to experience all that IS possible.

The choice really is yours, make it wisely.

Beach Wedding Cakes

Filed under: Relationship Management — admin at 1:37 am on Sunday, March 30, 2008

Looking for a beach theme wedding cake ideas?

When it comes to wedding cakes, long gone are the days of
following tradition. Since you are considering a beach theme
wedding cake, you are obviously not a slave to those traditions.
So… let’s stray from the “norm” and be adventurous!

One thing to remember… there are no rules! If there are…
well, rules are made to be broken. Your beachtheme wedding cake
can be anything you want it to be!

What Size?

How many guests are you planning to have? If you have your cake
made professionally it can range in price anywhere from $2.00 to
$15.00 per slice. A “slice” is normally considered to be 2
ounces or, approximately 4″ x 2″. The range in price will depend
on how much intricate detail you want on it. If the cake you
choose is very labor intensive, you can expect higher prices. If
you are on a tight budget, keep it simple!

What Shape?

A beach theme wedding cake can be any size, shape or
description. Be creative. If you have an idea for your cake,
sketch it out on paper and take it to that talented friend,
relative or your chosen bakery. If you can imagine it, someone
can make it!

Do not limit your thinking to a two or three tier cake. It can
be round, square, a sheet cake, a sculpted cake, individual mini
cakes, cupcakes or even cookies! Some brides even choose a one
or two layer, individual wedding cake on each guest table rather
than the traditional large cake at the head table. This is a
nice idea because it also serves as the table centerpiece. This
eliminates the added expense associated with having a wedding
centerpiece at each table!

A couple of things to keep in mind though…

* Since your reception may be on the beach, consider the sun! If
you are having a dawn or dusk ceremony, heat from the sun will
probably not be a major factor. However, if you are having your
wedding midday, consider an “ornamental” cake. By that I mean,
not edible with the exception of perhaps the bottom layer if you
and the groom plan to cut it. You don’t want your creation to
melt!

* Consider draping your cake in a decorative manner with tulle
to keep the bugs and sand out of it. It would be beautiful yet
practical.

* Purchase decorative, individual cake boxes. Fill them and
perhaps tie your wedding program or thank you to them with
ribbon. Keep them in a cooler until time to pass them out to
your guests. They will serve as your wedding favor, killing two
birds with one stone!

* Make your own beach theme wedding cake! Look inside the next
“DuncanHines” cake mix you buy. The instruction for making
baking tiered cakesare in there! You can do it. If you can’t,
I’ll bet you know a friend who could! In EVERY town there is a
friend or a “friend of a friend” who makes beautiful wedding
cakes. It’s a hobby for them. They love doing it! Of course they
still want to be paid, but not the ridiculous prices that a
professional will charge you.

So…go… find that friend!

Don’t Become An Identity Fraud Statistic!

Filed under: Security Hall — admin at 11:42 pm on Saturday, March 29, 2008

“You’ve just won a fabulous vacation or prize package! Now, if you’ll kindly give me your credit card information and social security number for verification purposes, you will receive this awesome gift!”

Now why would they need my credit card or social security number to send me a freebie? Can you say, “identity theft?”

Although there are legitimate reasons for people to need that information, such as a purchase or job application, thieves need it to steal your life and money from you!

Crime officials are reporting that this kind of theft is becoming quite common. Don’t be a victim! Follow a few common-sense suggestions to avoid finding out someone else has taken over your life-along with your bank account!

-Do not allow anyone to borrow your credit cards! Your best friend may be trustworthy, but her boyfriend may not be!

-Don’t provide personal information such as date of birth, credit card numbers, your pin number, mom’s maiden name, or social security number over the telephone unless you initiate the call.
Don’t leave mail lying around for strangers to pry into. How well do you really know your teen’s friends?

-Destroy all bills, pre-approved credit card applications, credit card receipts, and other financial information when you no longer need such items.

-Don’t keep private information like pin numbers and such in your purse or wallet. It’s just too risky. We humans are much too forgetful. Be honest, how many times have YOU had to return to a restaurant or friend’s home to retrieve your purse? Is there anything in there that could harm you if it was stolen or lost? Time to check.

-Check your credit reports regularly. To order your report, call the three major credit bureaus at these toll-free numbers: Equifax at (800) 685-1111, Experian at (888) 397-3742, or Trans Union at (800) 888-4213. By law, the most you can be charged for a copy of your report is $8.50. To be safe, consider getting a copy from each of the three companies. If after reviewing your report you spot signs of a possible fraud, report it immediately!

-Keep your passwords and pins confidential and secure. Avoid passwords and pin numbers that will be easy for a thief to figure out. For example, don’t use your name, street address or birth date. Also, change your passwords every once in awhile, just to be safe.

- Get Identity Fraud Insurance. It’s just plain smart.

The FTC works for the consumer to prevent fraudulent, deceptive and unfair business practices in the marketplace and to provide information to help consumers spot, stop and avoid them. To file a complaint or to get free information on consumer issues, visit www.ftc.gov or call toll-free, 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357); TTY: 1-866-653-4261. The FTC enters Internet, telemarketing, identity theft and other fraud-related complaints into Consumer Sentinel, a secure, online database available to hundreds of civil and criminal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad. Report suspected Internet-based fraud to the Federal Trade Commission or the IFCC (www.ifccfbi.gov/Default.asp), a new joint project of the FBI and the National White Collar Crime.

Nursing Home Neglect, Nursing Home Abuse and Negligence

Filed under: School of Health — admin at 8:22 pm on Saturday, March 29, 2008

With the volumes of seniors that are now moving into assisted care facilities, there has been a rise in nursing home neglect cases across the nation. Because the demand for excellent and affordable care and housing has increased in the last decade due to many of the baby boomers now turning 65, it seems as though there are more incidences of abuse and nursing home neglect to elderly patients.

There has been much speculation as to the causes of nursing home neglect, including
lack of qualified personnel to hire, poor management of facilities, and lack of funds or
insurance payments being delayed, all causing frustrations and inexperienced staff
members. All that withstanding, there should be NO excuse for abuse in nursing
homes, assisted living, or home care.

If you have a loved one that you fear has been a victim of nursing home neglect, you
should speak to your local police department about actions you can take against the
facility. First and foremost, document all evidence of abuse so that if you do choose to
hire a family lawyer to take on your case, you will have proof to backup your claim.
Also, it is wise to move your parent, grandparent or other relative that is being
neglected to a better facility immediately. Take a stand against abuse, and one step at
a time we can eliminate this problem.

Arabica Coffee Beans Are Pricey Yet Priceless!

Filed under: Snacks + More — admin at 4:55 pm on Saturday, March 29, 2008

Arabica coffee beans are known for a better-flavored coffee. There are two main species of coffee beans that are grown for sale: Robusta and Arabica. Gourmet coffee houses serve the smooth and very palatable Arabica coffees, while the worst cup of coffee you ever had probably came from a pot of bitter Robusta coffee that had been sitting for hours.

If you have been spoiled by the quality coffee served at coffee houses and cafes, you are probably craving the taste of Arabica coffee beans. You can brew fine coffee at home as well; the trick is to use only Arabica coffee beans. Organic coffee beans, grown without the use of artificial fertilizers, allows plantation owners to grow their farms in a sustainable way, without the use of chemicals, thus producing a mild, non acidic coffee bean. You should expect to pay a little more for organic coffee beans, but you can be confident in knowing that you are securing the future of the coffee industry worldwide.

Most specialty coffee and tea retail outlets only sell Arabica coffee and beans. On the other hand, the large commercial companies either sell Robusta coffee beans, or a mixture of both types of beans. This is because they are cheaper for the wholesaler and subsequently cheaper for the consumer. Arabica coffee beans produce a stronger-tasting coffee, and actually contain less caffeine than robusta beans. They cost a little more, but are far more satisfying.

While many people are only familiar with coffee beans grown in Colombia, they are actually commercially grown in more than 80 countries around the world. Coffee only grows near the equator, between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. While it is grown at varying altitudes, experts say that the richest coffee beans are harvested at high altitude plantations.

Wholesale coffee suppliers are available via mail-order catalogs or the Internet and can ready to assist you in making your next coffee purchase. Why pay retailers more, when cheaper costing, fresher wholesale coffee beans are available to you? Wholesale coffee bean buying allows you to eliminate the high cost of retail buying and let you purchase the same beans at a much lower cost. A savings of 20-30% over store chain prices can easily be expected. Savings can be more if you just shop around.

Wholesale coffee beans are far fresher than those beans that may have been sitting on a dusty store shelf, not for days, but for weeks, sometimes months longer than if you were to buy them direct from a wholesaler. You can be assured of the quality afforded you when you select wholesale coffee beans. Each supplier generally offers a huge selection of beans, bean blends and roasts available. You can order standard size one pound, or two pound packages directly from the wholesaler easier than if you were to pick them from a shelf in your favorite market.

Three Important Litter Box Considerations

Filed under: Animal Stuff — admin at 4:53 pm on Saturday, March 29, 2008

There are three important litter box considerations to
account for whether you’re a new kitten owner, or someone
who has had a cat for a while. If kitty isn’t happy with
any or all three of these, you may find she’ll start
urinating outside the box.

1. Litter Box Location:

Location is all-important in real estate. The litter box
location is important to your kitty. As an owner, you need
to be certain her box is in a quiet location, away from
traffic and noise. Ideally, a room that is seldom visited,
such as the basement or laundry room is a good choice.

Cats need to be left alone while tending to their business.
A child’s room, the hallway by the front door, or the
family room may be too noisy for her.

2. Litter Box Type:

New cat litter boxes are marketed constantly. The final
decision may rest with kitty. If you buy her a box, and she
doesn’t use it, think about the way she does her business.
For example, my boy, JJ (who is fixed), urinates standing
up. He’s 14 years old, and it may be too much effort for
him to squat. We have tall sided, and hooded litter boxes
to accommodate the splash on the back wall.

You may consider the mechanical, self-cleaning litter box.
They rake the results of kitty’s visit into a small
container. The drawbacks are that your cat may be scared of
the motor noise. If so, she won’t use it. The rakes, or
tines, need to be cleaned regularly. They’re close
together, and can be a real trial to clean properly. What if
you lose electrical power for an extended period of time?
The motor won’t operate, and the box won’t get scooped, if
you forget!

Bottom line? Observe your kitty doing her business, and
formulate a strategy about the best box to buy.

3. Cat Litter:

There are lots of different types of cat litter you can
purchase. There are different blends of clay; some are
perfumed, some are not. Again, your cat may decide for you.
If you purchase a certain brand, and kitty eliminates
somewhere else, you’ll need to experiment with different
types until you and she agree on what will be used.

Perfumed, or scented litter is for us humans, not the cat!
Some cats will refuse to patronize a box with heavily
scented litter. As bad as the smell may be for you and your
family, the end goal is find the right litter she’ll use
every time.

Exam Guides One: 5 Great Tips To Improve Your Strategy

Filed under: Education Special — admin at 3:17 pm on Saturday, March 29, 2008

In order to do well on a exam, you must first have a good knowledge of the information that is being examined. But, aside that, you must have a good strategy for taking the exam. This allows you to show what you know. This exam guide gives you some tips that will help you make a good strategy:

Directions

Test direction are very important, so read them carefully. Ask your teacher to explain any test direction that you do not understand. A good score on the exam is achieved only by following directions. If you don’t follow directions, you won’t be able to demonstrate what you know.

Examine

Examine the entire test in order to see how much you have to do, because, only by knowing it all you can break it down into parts more manageable for you.

Time

Once you are done with the test examination, it’s time for you to decide how much time you will spend on each item. If an item has different points, plan to spend the most time on items that count for the most points. A good planning of your time is especially important for essay test where you have to avoid spending too much time on one item and leave little time for other test items.

Easiest First

Remember to answer the items you find easiest first, because if you get stuck on a more difficult item that comes up early in the test, you may not have enough time to answer items you know.

Review

If you plan you time correctly, you will have time to review your answers and make sure they are as complete and accurate as possible. Also make sure you review the test directions to be certain you have answered all items required.

Using this exam guide will definately help you do better on exams, no matter the field they cover, and get better grades.

From networking to database administration to programming, http://www.ExamGuru.net offers a wide variety of IT training guides to help you achieve your certification and career goals.
