Want To Know How To Plan A Great Baby Shower

Filed under: Kids & Parents — admin at 7:29 am on Friday, November 28, 2008

Got a friend who’s pregnant and you’re thinking about organising a Baby Shower for her but….What is a Baby Shower and how do you go about setting one up? Read on and find out.

Baby showers are typically parties thrown for friends that are pregnant. Over the years this practice has changed significantly and has become more elaborate requiring planning for it to be successful.

Throwing a Baby shower for your friend can help make the expectant mother feel more secure. She can see her friends are all pulling for her giving moral and in some cases financial support. Usually the baby shower is organized by non-relatives. But nowadays they are organised by anyone - family members, support group members, church friends, friends in fact pretty much anyone except the expecting mother.

So how do you go about organising that Baby Shower?

Inviting the Guests -

Who should you invite? Usually, the guest list will only include those nearest and dearest to the expectant mother. It wouldn’t hurt if she gets a first look at the guest list so that she can suggest who should be invited. If you are planning a surprise baby shower, you will have to do a little research on who should be attending instead of running the list through the expectant mother.

If the child is not a firstborn, you may opt to keep the number of guests down to the closest to the mother. Firstborn baby showers tend to have a larger guest list since it is, after all, the mother’s first time.

The thing to remember is that the nature of baby showers is intimacy. So, for any baby shower party, try making the gathering one of intimate friends.

You could use informal ways to invite these guests: email, phone and others. Invitation cards and other letters are the best way, however, as they provide a tangible, traceable evidence of invitation. Plus, it is the most sure and formal way to invite a person - and in many cultures - the only way.

What About the Guys -

The nature of the party is probably going to tend towards the feminine side; if the organizers of the party have a provision for this, then inviting men would be fine. It also depends on the men, since the party may dwell on topics such as pregnancy, children, and other motherly topics, they might not be that excited to join. All in all, it depends on the preference of the organizers.

Venue -

Anywhere! As long as it can keep with the placid and fun nature of the occasion, any place would be fine. The more usual places on baby shower lists are backyards, formal halls, restaurants, and basically any room that has the amenities to make a baby shower successful. Just make sure the venue is not crowded and stressful to the mother-to-be. It also pays to make sure the venue is set long before the actual baby shower happens.

When to Throw a Baby Shower -

Usually this is one or two months before her due. The baby shower is the perfect time to get your friends baby needs and stuff she may not have had time to purchase yet. It has to be well-timed though - not too close to the due date, and not to far as to whittle down the excitement.

Baby showers are a pleasant surprise to expecting mothers. It takes a lot of the stress of expecting a child off of their minds and provides a means for friends to show support and concern (and of course, baby gifts) to expecting friends.

A properly coordinated baby shower will be greatly appreciated and forever remembered by mothers long after they have delivered their children.

Discovering the Best Baby Bedding

Filed under: Kids & Parents — admin at 6:33 pm on Thursday, November 27, 2008

One of the biggest worries when a mom to be is preparing for baby is the baby’s room. Having the proper baby furniture and bedding is essential. But, what do you need and what isn’t necessary? Sure, it’s nice to have a whole room designed to a nursery theme with crib, rocker, bassinet, and changing table.

A crib needs a larger space, so most parents have to have the nursery done. This means that you probably won’t be able to keep the baby in the same room with you. During the night when the baby wakes, you’ll have to get up and go out to get the infant for feeding and changing. Also a crib is much larger, so the little infant will look so very tiny lying there.

A bassinet is portable. The base has wheels so you can roll it from one room to another. A crib is much harder to move, so during the day you will still need to have a smaller bed for the baby in the living room or den. Plus, the sleeping basket comes out of the bassinet so you can take the baby’s bed with you when you travel.

Be prepared that the crib might feel a bit large to the baby who has been accustomed to a bassinet, but the transition will be much easier when the baby is older than it would have been with a newborn.

If your baby seems bothered by the size of the crib, try putting a pillow at his feet to give the illusion of a smaller space. However, if your baby is turning over on his own, or scooting about the crib, leave the pillow out, as it can be dangerous.

To make the transition easier, have the baby take naps in the crib for a few weeks before you move him in there for the whole night. Ideally, have baby take naps in his crib from the very beginning, so that when you move him there permanently, the surroundings will be familiar.

The kids are too small to understand the difference about having gender specific cartoons and animals and they are attracted to anything which pleases their eyes and make them smile. It is just that when they get a little older, little boys would feel a little awkward having his bed done in pinks and pastels.

When baby girls grow older, their beds could have blinds with the curtains hanging on rods above. This gives the bed somewhat a princess bed kind of appearance. Not that the girls would be complaining!

Bedding is one interesting avenue where there are a lot of options in store for the parent from choosing the kind and texture of sheets, the choice of colors and baby bedding patterns.

Breast Pumps

Filed under: Kids & Parents — admin at 7:33 pm on Tuesday, November 25, 2008

A breast pump is a mechanical device that can be used to extract milk for later use from a lactating woman. The way a breast pump works is similar to a milking machine used in commercial dairy production.

Extracted breast milk can be stored so that someone else can feed the baby by bottle. Sometimes the breasts produce more milk than the infant can consume. A breast pump can be used in these instances when the breasts become engorged preventing proper latching by the infant. Breast pumping relieves pressure in the breasts. Also, this can be used when some babies cannot latch properly for direct breastfeeding even though the mother desires the benefits of breast milk. A breast pump stimulates lactation in women and can be used to continue lactation to recover from pregnancy even when the pumped milk is not used.

Breast pumps come in a variety of models, the most popular being the manual pump where the woman can directly control the pressure and frequency of pumps and the battery-operated pumps. However, electrically powered pumps are presently gaining in popularity. Some breast pumps are designed so that the portion of the pump is the baby bottle used for feeding. Another popular design available on the market is the Hands-Free pump.

It is suggested to start using a breast pump to provide stimulation immediately after the delivery. A hospital-grade double electric breast pump can be used until the supply is well established. The hospital’s NICU can provide the details regarding the renting of the hospital-grade breast pump. For the first couple of weeks it is advised to use a breast pump 8 to 10 times within a 24-hour period. Frequent stimulation establishes a good supply. So, initially, pump around the clock, although at night go for slightly longer periods between sessions. Initially, ten to twelve minutes per pumping session is enough. Even though much colostrum or milk is not expressed in the first few days, the supply will increase over the next several days with dedicated pumping.

The hospital’s NICU will provide the instructions on storing and transporting the milk to the baby bottles. Please follow the guidelines to avoid passing infections to the baby. Sterile collection bottles and sterilized pump kit is a safe option. Even in the hospital, deliver the expressed breast milk as often as possible.

It is important to use the breast pump at least 6 to 8 times per day that the mother is able to start direct breastfeeding. Decrease the length of pumping by a couple of minutes if the supply becomes extremely large. However, frequent stimulation is necessary. Even when the baby’s intake is low, as in the cases of premature babies, milk production needs to continue on as though the baby was born full-term.

Celebrity Babies and their Famous Parents

Filed under: Kids & Parents — admin at 5:28 pm on Sunday, November 23, 2008

With so many celebrities having babies these days, it is high time we acknowledged the new Hollywood royalty. It seems like every supermarket tabloid out there is absolutely obsessed with the private lives of our beloved celebrities. We would not go as far to say that we are obsessed, but we certainly do not lack interest in the lives of our favorite celebrities.

We are absolutely in love with Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin. They have to be one of the sweetest couples in the entertainment industry. It seems like yesterday that their first daughter, Apple, was born. Just this past week, they gave birth to their first son, Moses. At the time this writing we were unable to locate any photos, but it is safe to assume that Moses will be one of the most genetically gifted children in Hollywood.

As you are all likely aware, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are expecting their first child. There has been a lot of talk in the press about them as of late. In particular, there has been a firestorm of controversy surrounding the role of Scientology in the birth of their first child. Tom is a devout adherent of the Scientology movement, and it has been said that they have some controversial ideas about things. We are unsure what constitutes a Scientologically sound childbirth, but we wish Tom and Katie the best of luck!

If you are avid reader of any celebrity gossip rags, you are likely aware that Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner recently had a baby girl named Violet. While they are not our favorite celebrity couple, we absolutely love the name they chose. It is a timeless, classically beautiful name. While I am certain that there are some superhero jokes in here somewhere, we will refrain at this time. Congratulations Ben and Jennifer on the happy, healthy arrival of baby Violet!

While we are confident that you are as sick of hearing about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as we are, it does deserve mentioning that they are expecting their own child. Even though they have a couple of adopted children, they are finally expecting one of their own. Pregnancy really seems to suit Angelina, and Brad truly seems in his element toting babies about town. Baby is due sometime in early May. Best wishes to the most popular celebrity couple in America.

Ways to Protect Your Child from Bunk Bed Accidents and Injury At Home

Filed under: Kids & Parents — admin at 12:49 pm on Saturday, November 22, 2008

Bunk beds are frequently used as a child’s first regular bed after the child outgrows a crib. Some bunk beds also are used separately as twin beds for older children and even adults. Every year, thousands of children receive treatment for injuries associated with bunk beds. Most of these injuries are fairly minor and occur when children fall from the beds. But there are other less obvious yet potentially very serious hazards associated with bunk bed structures that have entrapped children and resulted in suffocation or deaths.

1. Head Entrapment under Bunk Bed Guard Rails.

This can cause death to young children. To reduce the risk of your child slipping feet first into the space between the lower edge of a guardrail and the top surface of the mattress never allow children under 6 years-old on the upper bunk. Also close the space between the lower edge of the guardrail and upper edge of the bed frame to 3-1/2 inches or less.

2. Falling Mattresses or Foundations Can Cause Injury or Even Kill A Small Child.

Mattresses or foundations resting only on ledges need cross wires, or other means of support to help prevent dislodgement, even when beds are not stacked. Securely fasten supports to ledges of both beds with screws or bolts. Supports can be provided by wood slats, metal straps or sturdy wires. Be sure crossties are under the mattress foundation of each bed and that they are secured in place even if bunks are used as twin beds. Fasten additional cross ties underneath the mattress foundation of both beds.

3. Using the Wrong Size Mattress Can Cause Injury or Even Death

Strangulation deaths can occur if a child falls through an opening created between the mattress and headboard or footboard when a regular length mattress is used in an extra long bed frame. Choose a mattress that correctly fits your bed.

4. Use of the Bed without Rails on Both Sides

Death or injury may occur if a very young child rolls off the bed and becomes entrapped between the wall and the side of the bed not having a guardrail. This hazard is not unique to bunk beds. Regular beds can present the same hazard. Always use two side guardrails on the upper bunk. Keep guardrails securely in place at all times no matter what the age of the child. Children move about during sleep and may roll out of bed.

5. Playing Around Bed Furniture Frequently Contributes To Accidents.

Teach children that rough play is unsafe around and on beds and other furniture. Emphasize to children to use the ladder and not chairs or other pieces of furniture to climb into or out of the top bunk.

6. Metal Bunk Beds

To help avoid bunk bed collapse, inspect all mattress support fin tabs and pockets for breaks or cracks in the metal and welds. The fin tabs are inserted into pockets located near each of the bed’s eight corners. Stop using damaged beds as bunks and contact the manufacturer or importer for repair or replacement.

Learning to Share - Conflict Resolution for Parents and Childcare Providers

Filed under: Kids & Parents — admin at 11:29 pm on Friday, November 21, 2008

If your child is in daycare, it’s likely that you’ll eventually disagree with something
your childcare provider does or says. Recognizing when to say something, and how
to approach the subject with your provider, will help maintain a positive relationship
between you and your childcare provider and a healthy environment for your child.

The best way to resolve a conflict is to never let it happen in the first place. Make
sure you communicate with your childcare provider, letting them know your
expectations about the care you want your child to receive. If there are things that
you absolutely want a certain way, like your child not watching any television or
eating sweets, make sure you discuss them in the initial interview. It’s also
important to understand that parents and providers can have different views
regarding appropriate ways to raise a child. Understanding that your provider may
not do things exactly as you would, but that your child is still receiving quality care,
is vital in preventing conflict.

Despite the best communication, you still may disagree with something your
childcare provider does while caring for your child. Try to say something as soon as
you notice an issue. The longer you let an issue go, the more chance there is for it
to grow into something bigger. Also, the sooner you address the issue, the sooner
you can resolve it and clear the air in your relationship. Not addressing the problem
right away could create enough stress with your provider that you are not able to
repair the relationship and may need to find a new provider.

Ask your provider for a time to discuss the issue. If possible, choose a time when
you and your provider can talk without distractions. Don’t talk in the doorway with
your child tugging at your leg or when your provider is trying to manage 6 toddlers.
Allowing you both to focus on the conversation will help you hear what each other is
saying and really understand each other.

Explain your concern in simple terms, but do not accuse or blame your provider.
Use statements like, “I have a concern about how much television Mike is watching”,
instead of, “You are letting Mike watch too much television”. Both statements give
the same message, but the delivery style of the first one is less accusing and will
help foster a better discussion. You are both invested in the care of your child, and
being able to discuss any issues rationally and openly will help your child receive
quality care. Discuss the behavior that concerned you, why it concerned you, and
what you would like done to correct the situation. Listen carefully to your provider
so she can explain her thoughts on the situation. There may be safety or logistics
reasons why your provider is doing something a certain way.

Once you have discussed the issue, restate the solution that you both agreed on.
That way, you can make sure you both understand what the next steps are and how
the issue is going to be resolved. A question like, “Do you feel comfortable with the
solution we decided on”, is a good way to make sure you both are on the same
page, and gives your provider the chance to say if something is still bothering her.

Toddlers and Transgressions

Filed under: Kids & Parents — admin at 8:48 pm on Thursday, November 20, 2008

It is way too easy for someone to get hurt in a mess of toddlers. Even as infants it did not take long before curiosity and varying rates of development saw violations of personal space. At first it was cute and innocent. One of the four would find the hand of another. Soon one boy would be sucking the thumb of his brother or gently kneading his sister’s ear. Before long you might find the more ambulatory tasting the eyes, nose or toes of the less mobile.

Soon sucking became teething and the toothy wet-willies became irritating. Cute explorations gave way to contests of capture and control, with outcomes ranging from minor boo-boos to major outburst of dramatic indignation. Offense began to be taken. The hard hand of self-righteous retribution was soon raised amongst the brethren with a shrill, ageless cry for justice.

Early on we began to coordinate the correction of the wrongs done. Hugs and apologizes are mandatory and insincerity is not tolerated. Still a trip to the swing set where a particularly shiny stone or an unusually appealing clod of dirt is spied can spark conflicting claims of ownership and general discontent in the ranks. Peacemaking can be seen from time to time, even when they don’t think you’re watching. Still, not unlike so many adults and especially Christian adults, offense and retribution is much too common.

The gnarly roots of offense spread quickly in hearts were true forgiveness is not applied and worked in liberally. Insincerity to pacify Pops and avoid correction is never enough. Not for the toddling Fab four or for we grown-up types either.

Yep, it is way too easy for someone to get hurt in a mess of toddlers. Sadly we all have a sad propensity to toddle more in our actions than to respect others feelings or to truly forgive the transgressions we suffer. One thing we should never forget is that Jesus is synonymous with forgiveness and He should be applied and worked in liberally every day.

From His perspective all humanity must look like a pool full of toddlers arguing over who jumped in first and is the wettest because of the others jumping in. In all this mess of humanity He keeps His eyes and hands on us, looking for the peacemakers and the sincere forgivers. These He towels off, blesses and rejoices in. I love the times I get to do likewise with my amazing charges.

As we all toddle back inside from a successful swing set experience, His faithfulness to never give up, leave or forsake us makes my heart soar. It all seems easier to forgive when you know you are forgiven. In this the shiny stones and interesting clods in life dim in allure and the path of growth and purpose becomes brighter and our tiny strides stronger and longer.

Prayer and Ponderance

Find a quiet moment, just you no TV, Radio, wild running children, friends, spouses or co-workers. Read over these verses and take in a bit of God’s peace. Be still, be thankful and ask God to expand your hearts’ capacity for peace, patience, love and understanding. Even in the mess of this day know He will hear you and meet your need.

Matthew 6:12-15

Mark 11:25-26

Matthew 5:9

Write down the first person that comes to mind when you think about those who have hurt you.

Write down the first person that comes to mind when you think about those whom you have hurt.

Purpose to prayerfully forgive and ask forgiveness of those listed above.

Receive the forgiveness, healing and hope that is and was and shall always be there for you in Christ.

Thank Him and prepare to rejoin the wild running children, friends, spouses or co-workers and walk out your peacemaking.
