Diaper Cake: Why Producers of “Sex And The City” Order Baby Diaper Cake for Baby Shower Episode?

Filed under: Kids & Parents — admin at 1:06 pm on Sunday, April 12, 2009

If you’re a “Sex And The City” fan, you know what I’m taking about.

Yes, the diaper cake!

You can find it in the “Baby Shower” episode for the character Miranda.

So why baby diaper cakes are so popular?

I havn’t yet found who invented the “diaper cake” idea.

But the result is obvious especially when you’re throwing a theme based baby shower.

Since normal baby shower gifts (like diapers and baby bottles) don’t really make any exciting (I mean knock the mom-to-be’s socks off!), so the baby diaper cake fits perfectly into your shower theme and does double duty as a cute centerpiece.

Mom-to-be loves it.

She is happy to use the items you included in the baby diaper cake for feeding the baby-to-come, such as baby bottle and baby bibs.

She will also be in great joyfulness to take the diaper cake apart and find baby toys you include, such as baby rattles, baby teether toys, and pacifiers.

And she might fall in love with the plush animal you use to top the baby shower diaper cake.

The possibilities are endless.

Finally, it’s very easy to make it on your own and show your personal creativity.

Before get it started, you should decide the fit-the-mom “cake recipe” (e.g. your baby items shopping list). Then you can purchase all these infant essentials and decorations from companies like Baby-gift-idea.com.

Then follow a step-by-step instructions from book or the internet, finishing your baby shower diaper cakes in many styles and colors, including 1, 2, 3 even 4 wonderful tiers will be easy like watching a movie!

Another reason more people are talking about diaper cakes not only it is no doubt the must-be-no-matter-how baby shower gifts, but also many people have their personal passionate hobby blossoming into a full time business.

Keep it Pure and Simple by Breastfeeding Your Baby

Filed under: Kids & Parents — admin at 10:29 am on Sunday, April 12, 2009

Most mothers bottle feed their baby and there is no doubt that breastfeeding can sometimes be difficult to get started, but if a mother persists, she finds that it is a lot less bother than bottle feeding. Breastfeeding is actually less stressful and less work than bottle-feeding.

Mothers who give up breastfeeding, state that it is because of the discomfort or embarrassment they feel. Both of these reasons are understandable, but they can both be overcome. All it takes is patience.

A mother can avoid the pain of sore nipples by making sure that her baby is ‘latched on’ properly. This means that the baby sucks on the breast in the correct position. The nipple should be placed well in to the baby’s mouth. It is the areola (the dark area surrounding the nipple) that the baby actually sucks on; not the nipple. Getting the baby to latch on reduces the baby’s chances of becoming “gassy”, and also allows the baby to control the flow of milk - something that is easier for the baby to do when breastfeeding rather than bottle feeding.

Also, the mother can take some general steps to avoid painful nipples. Nipples should be exposed to air as much as possible. If this isn’t possible, then plastic dome-shaped breast shells (not nipple shields) can be worn to protect your nipples from rubbing by your clothing. Don’t over wash the nipples; bathing once a day is more than enough.

Engorgement of the breasts usually occurs 3 to 4 days after birth but can be avoided by getting the baby to latch on correctly. However, if your breasts become engorged to the point of severe discomfort or if the baby is not able to suckle, cabbage leaves seem to help decrease the engorgement more rapidly than ice packs or other treatments. If you are unable to get the baby latched on, start cabbage leaves, start expressing your milk and give the expressed milk to the baby by spoon, cup, finger feeding or eyedropper. If it persists consult your midwife or health visitor.

Embarrassment of breastfeeding is something that Western society seems to condone. It was not always so. If you feel this way you should discuss this with your partner and family. If the support is not forthcoming, then try to educate them! Finally, use your doctor or midwife as a support. Attitudes in the medical profession have changed drastically in recent years and you should find a lot of support at your local clinic. If you don’t then change clinic, midwife or doctor.

Breastfeeding really is a lot easier than bottle feeding and it is certainly a lot better for your baby. Companies making milk formula tell us how their formula is ‘the most like breast milk it has ever been’. Maybe this is true, but it never will be as good as breast milk. If you read the ingredients on the side of the tin you will find many of the following: vegetable oils; disodium guanosine-5, monophosphate, taurine, magnesium, sodium citrate, pantothenic acid, potassium chloride, beta-carotene and biotin. What exactly is disodium guanosine-5? Companies have been making formula for only the past century; women have been making breast milk a lot longer than that. Also, formula is made for everyone’s baby, whereas a mother’s breast milk is unique; it’s made only for her child.

Getting up in the middle of the night to feed a baby is incredibly tiring. Why make it even more tiring than it already is by bottle feeding? When you bottle feed, you have to get out of bed and boil water, make the formula and then wait for it to cool before you can feed baby. When you breastfeed you don’t have to even get out of bed, if you child is in a crib beside you. You can feed your child and go back to sleep far sooner than if you bottle feed.

Some other things that make breastfeeding easier than bottle feeding;

1. It’s cheaper.

2. It’s a lot easier to clean your breasts than a whole stack of bottles.

3. Breast milk doesn’t leave permanent stains on clothes, unlike formula.

4. You can go anywhere, at anytime on the spur of the moment. You don’t have to worry about having enough formula.

5. You also travel light; no need to bring a bag full of bottles and formula

Breastfeeding may be harder to get started than bottle-feeding for a lot of mothers, but the benefits outweigh these early problems. So, if you were thinking of bottle-feeding rather than breastfeeding, think again. Breast milk is pure goodness for your child and breastfeeding makes life a lot simpler for mothers.

Baby Naming and Godparents

Filed under: Kids & Parents — admin at 6:00 am on Sunday, April 12, 2009

Cinderella had a wonderful fairy Godmother who helped Cinderella achieve her heart’s desire in meeting and captivating a prince. This kind of Godmother seems to be totally different from the kind of Godfather Marlon Brando portrayed. But despite this, or perhaps because of this, parents often wonder whether the term Godparent is appropriate term to use for a Naming Ceremony.

While Godparents have always been synonymous with a religious christening or baptism, the term God does not exclude spiritual beliefs which have nothing to do with a specific religion. People, like the poet Wordsworth, for example, saw God in the grandeur of nature, while the early Egyptians worshipped the Sun, as God personified.

However, for those people who do see God as part of established religion, and who would like to substitute another term for their baby’s naming ceremony, there are many substitutes which are just as suitable.

Some of the popular terms used are Guideparents, Guardparents, Mentors and Sponsors. And, no doubt, other names will pop up as the celebration becomes more widely used throughout the world. At the moment, Australia leads the field for the celebration of this particular occasion.

Whatever the term used, the role of the substitute Godparent remains the same. This is the person, or persons, who undertake to assume the responsibility of looking after the child in the even that something happens to the parents.

It is stressed that this is not a religious ceremony where the child is inducted into a specific religious community. A naming ceremony doesn’t preclude the possibility that the parents will choose to have the child christened or that the child will, later in life, choose to be christened or baptized into a particular religion.

A naming ceremony is seen as a welcoming ceremony into the community of its family members, family friends, and by extension, into the wider community of humanity.

Naming ceremony is just that - a naming. It’s a way of saying, ‘Welcome to the world. We’re happy to have you amongst us.’

The 10 Child Safety Devices You Need in Your Home

Filed under: Kids & Parents — admin at 4:38 am on Saturday, April 11, 2009

Did you know that you can childproof your home for a fraction of what it would cost to have a professional do it? Child safety devices are available at hardware stores, baby equipment shops, supermarkets, drug stores, home and linen stores, and through mail order catalogues.

Here are 10 child safety devices you need to help prevent injuries to young children.

1. Safety latches and locks use on cabinets and drawers to help prevent children from gaining access to medicines and household cleaners, as well as knives and other sharp objects.

Look for safety latches and locks that adults can easily install and use, but that are sturdy enough to withstand pulls and tugs from children. Safety latches are not a guarantee of protection, but they can make it more difficult for children to reach dangerous substances. Even products with child-resistant packaging should be locked away, out of reach. A safety latch or lock usually costs less than $2.00

2. Safety gates use to help prevent falls down stairs and keep children away from dangerous areas. Look for safety gates that children can’t easily dislodge, but that adults can open and close without difficulty. For the top of stairs, gates that screw to the wall are more secure than pressure gates.

New safety gates that meet safety standards display a certification seal from the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA). If you have an older safety gate, be sure it doesn’t have “V” shapes that are large enough for a child’s head and neck to fit into. A safety gate will cost from $13.00 to $40.00

3. Doorknob covers and door locks use to help keep children away from places with hazards, including swimming pools. Be sure the doorknob cover is sturdy enough not to break, but allows a door to be opened quickly by an adult in case of emergency.

By restricting access to potentially hazardous rooms in the home, doorknob covers could help prevent many kinds of injuries. To prevent access to swimming pools, door locks should be placed high out of reach of young children. Locks should be used in addition to fences and door alarms. Sliding glass doors, with locks that must be re-secured after each use, are often not an effective barrier to pools. A doorknob cover usually costs about $1.00 and a door lock usually costs $5.00 and up.

4. Anti-scald devices use for faucets and shower heads and set your water heater temperature to 120 degrees Fahrenheit to help prevent burns from hot water. An anti-scald device will cost from $6.00 to $30.00

5. Smoke detectors use on every level of your home and near bedrooms to alert you to fires. Smoke detectors are essential safety devices for protection against fire deaths and injuries.

Check smoke detectors once a month to make sure they’re working. If detectors are battery-operated, change batteries at least once a year or consider using 10-year batteries. A smoke detector usually costs less than $10.00.

6. Window guards and safety netting use to help prevent falls from windows, balconies, decks, and landings. Check these safety devices frequently to make sure they are secure and properly installed and maintained. There should be no more than four inches between the bars of the window guard.

If you have window guards, be sure at least one window in each room can be easily used for escape in a fire. Window screens are not effective for preventing children from falling out of windows. A window guard or safety netting usually costs from $8.00 to $16.00.

7. Corner and edge bumpers use to help prevent injuries from falls against sharp edges of furniture and fireplaces. Be sure to look for bumpers that stay securely on furniture or hearth edges. A corner and edge bumper usually costs $1.00 and up.

8. Outlet covers and outlet plates use to help protect children from electrical shock and possible electrocution. Be sure the outlet protectors cannot be easily removed by children and are large enough so that children cannot choke on them. An outlet cover usually costs less than $2.00.

9. Carbon monoxide (CO) detector use outside bedrooms to help prevent CO poisoning. Install CO detectors near sleeping areas in your home. A carbon monoxide (CO) detector usually costs from $30.00 to $70.00.

10. Cordless phone use to make it easier to continuously watch young children, especially when they’re in bathtubs, swimming pools, or other potentially dangerous areas. A cordless phone costs $30.00 and up.

You don’t need to spend a lot of money to childproof your home. But you do need to do it now.

The Best Uses of a Video Baby Monitor

Filed under: Kids & Parents — admin at 2:47 pm on Wednesday, April 8, 2009

For any parent, nothing is more important than the welfare of his or her child. Especially when the child is still an infant, he cannot do things on his own, more specifically, defend himself against anything that may harm him; thus, a parent would always want to make certain that his child is safe and comfortable all the time.

One of the wonders of technology is that it makes possible for us to do two things at the same time. Take for example watching over your child while doing the laundry, talking on the phone, preparing dinner or doing any other activity. How do you do it then? It’s simple with a video baby monitor. This device allows you to remotely look after your baby as he sleeps or plays with his toys. It’s very helpful and convenient nowadays to have a video baby monitor as it helps you keep an eye on what your baby does or listen to what he says, whether he’s calling for you or is crying because he is wet, sleepy or hungry.

Through a video baby monitor, you never miss a moment checking out your baby while you work on something else in another room in your house. You need not pay for a nanny to watch over your child as he sleeps and you need not worry going away from your baby because you have another important thing to attend toall you need is a video baby monitor.

Features

A video baby monitor device features a simplex radio transmitter and receiver system. This system includes a microphone, which is positioned near you baby so it can pick up sounds that your baby is making, and a receiver (with a speaker), which you can carry around the house with you. Many video baby monitors nowadays have self-filtering microphones for superior sound clarity.

The video baby monitor also features digital cameras placed near your baby and a lightweight colored LCD or black and white screen that simultaneously displays video of your baby’s activities. The monitor may look like a wireless phone with display screen or a small portable TV.

Hand held video baby monitor may also be available with a belt clip or a flip stand so you can conveniently carry it around or place it on top of your desk. More advanced models have added features like movement sensors and vibrating alert on the receiver.

Powering a video baby monitor are batteries that are usually rechargeable. A good video baby monitor battery can last up to ten hours. The transmitter, however, may need to be plugged into a socket.

Frequency

Frequency used by video baby monitors varies. It can be as low as 40 MHz, 900 MHz or even 2.4 GHz. The higher the frequency, the clearer the video and sound is and the wider the range is. Since a video baby monitor uses a wireless transmission system, it is possible that the transmission can be picked up by another user, so most new models nowadays have features that let the user choose bands.

Duplex Video Baby Monitor

This type of video baby monitor has transceivers that let you communicate with your baby. It’s called duplex video baby monitor because of its 2-way sound monitoring system.

Pushchairs, Stroller and Buggies - Is there too much Choice when Buying?

Filed under: Kids & Parents — admin at 11:54 am on Wednesday, April 8, 2009

At first glance, it appears we are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing and buying a pushchair, stroller or buggy. Some are marketed by the pushchair manufacturers as a fashion accessory, and come with many colour options. Years ago there were pushchairs and prams - now there are pushchairs, sports pushchairs, combi pushchairs, shoppers, buggies, joggers, three wheeler buggies and more…

Oh, and let’s not forget those special pushchairs for different family situations - twin pushchairs, tandem pushchairs and even triple and quad pushchairs.

Now, you are probably starting to get confused with all the choices, but it is still much more complicated. There are pushchairs with large wheels, small wheels, air tyres, rubber tyres. You have to consider weight, width, handle height, shopping basket size.

One of the most important considerations when choosing a pushchair, not yet mentioned, is price. In addition, is a raincover included or is that extra? What about a parasol?

So, now that it all sounds so complicated, let’s try to put some order into this chaos and make it seem so much more straight-forward.

First, before you even begin to search for a new pushchair, you have to decide what your priorities are, what will the pushchair be used for?

That sounds obvious, but for example, will your pushchair mostly be on man-made surfaces, such as going to the shops for shopping - or will your main use be outdoors? A buggy is a light pushchair, small, narrow and lightweight. Definitely not suitable for rough ground but great for shops. So that might suit in this situation. A buggy is most suited to children older than 9 months who sit upright. They fold away quite small and so are easy to transport.

A very different type of pushchair is a jogger. This will suit an active, sporty parent, perfect for using off-road and easy to steer.

So, sit down and make your list of requirements. Consider when and how you will use your pushchair. Consider how important weight is to you. Depending on how tall you are, some pushchairs can be difficult to push because their handle height is high. Some pushchairs have adjustable handle height. Will you have a requirement to carry your pushchair up and down stairs - remember you will have to carry your baby at the same time!

Do you use public transport? - this makes size important as a large pushchair may cause difficulties, particularly on busy services.

We must also consider the baby - the pushchair should be comfortable, a reclining seat could be very important.

In my research I have discovered that many parents make a mistake in choosing their first pushchair and make their choice for many of the wrong reasons. I decided to rationalise many of the factors that should be considered when choosing a pushchair and developed a website where parents can offer their feedback to help others make these choices. The website is My Pushchair.

Mark Hartshorne is a father with two young children and created a website to review pushchairs and strollers to offer parents a fair comparison on price, size, design and more. The website is My Pushchair.

More Games for a Baby Shower

Filed under: Kids & Parents — admin at 10:17 am on Friday, April 3, 2009

This is a companion article including several more games for baby showers which I’ve found to be entertaining for guests in my extensive experience hosting baby showers. As I mentioned in my previous article, having games for your guests to play at the baby shower helps break the ice among those who aren’t acquainted and is a great way to make your shower exciting and fun.

1} Piggy Bank Game. Fill a small piggy bank with quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, keeping a tally of how many coins it takes to fill up the piggy bank. At the baby shower, pass the piggy around to all your guests and ask them to write down how many coins they believe are in the piggy bank. The closest person to the actual amount of coins wins a small prize. You can present the piggy bank to the mother-to-be after the game is finished.

2) What’s in the Bag? For this game, you’ll need ten brown paper lunch bags, ten small baby items (for example: diaper, comb, travel size powder, bib, four ounce bottle, nasal aspirator, etc.). Write the numbers one through ten on the bags and place a baby item inside each one, stapling or taping the bags shut. Give your guests pens and pads of paper and then pass around the bag labeled number one. Tell them they must feel what’s in the bag and then write down what they believe the item to be. Continue passing around the bags until each guest has had the chance to examine them and guess what they think is in the bags. The one with the most items guessed correcly wins a prize.

3) Baby Food Game. To further test your guests’ deductive abilities, purchase ten different types of baby food and remove the labels, replacing the labels with a number one through ten. Make sure you record what each numbered baby food jar contains. Buy at least a few jars of food that are similar in color, like peas and spinach. Give each guest paper, pen, paper plate, and a spoon. Pass around the number one jar and tell the guest to put a spoonful on their plates. They must try to guess what type of baby food is in each jar, using their sight, smell, and taste. Don’t make them taste it if they don’t want to, as I’ve known many people to resist doing so. The person who guesses the most correctly wins.

4) Memory Game. To play this game, you’ll need to assemble a number of small baby items, however many you wish to purchase. Some suggestions are: travel baby powder, travel baby bath, travel baby shampoo, travel baby lotion, diaper, small package of baby wipes, thermometer, nasal aspirator, baby spoon and fork, diaper shirt, nail clippers, hooded towel and washcloth, bib, lap pad, diaper pin, etc. Place all these items in a baby bathtub (or on a tray, if you prefer). Keep the bathtub or tray covered until it’s time to play, then asks your guests to gather around it. Give them one minute to look at the items and attempt to memorize them. After one minute, cover it back up and have your guests write down all the items they can remember. The one with the most correct wins a small prize. If you like, you can then give the mother-to-be the bathtub full of goodies.

Prizes. I’ve been to some showers in which the prize that is won from the games is something baby-related which is then given to the mother-to-be. I like the idea of doing that, but I also think the game winners should receive a prize gift also. So I usually do both; the game winner receives a gift for herself and one to give to the expectant mother. These are always something small, like a bottle and nipple brush, nail clipper set, plastic bottle, baby powder - things that the mother will need but aren’t usually given as shower presents.

Whether you decide to give two prize gifts, or just one for the expectant mother or one for the game winner, these games will provide much merriment and entertainment for your shower guests.
