A Primer on Working in Thailand

So you want to live in Thailand? Ordinarily when people consider living in Thailand, they immediately think they need to take up an English teaching placement to pay for their time there. Even though there are lucrative English teaching positions in universities like Thammasat or Chulalongkorn, the vast majority of such jobs are often poorly paid.

In fact, don’t expect a decent salary for any job requiring skills, teaching or not. It sounds like bad news, but actually if you aspire to live in the Land of Smiles for a year or two, such low salaries aren’t a worry since Thailand is a cheap place to live, the infrastructure is the best in this region of the world, it’s a safe country, and you can still climb up the career ladder because you can get a great work experience in Thailand.

Yet there’s an obscured dilemma that slowly shows itself after some time: so you’ve been living in Thailand for a couple of years, you’ve gained great work experience, your wage isn’t great, but so what : the cost of living is low so no problem. HOWEVER, guess what? You’ve not been able to actually BANK money while living in Thailand. Airfares look ridiculously over-priced compared to your salary. The price of things back home begins to panic you when thinking about your money earned in Thailand. This problem hits a lot of non-Thai nationals in Thailand a few years after starting work there. Lasting future plans can often be put on hold since you haven’t the nest egg of money to put into action any long-term plan like purchasing a house, purchasing a car, or tieing the knot..

Consequently, important point : when considering living in Thailand, also remember that it is extremely difficult to bank substantial quantities of hard currency when considering the cost of living of your home country.

Even so, it’s not all about cash is it? You can gain a wonderful experience in Thailand, perhaps acquire the Thai language, make new friends, travel around Thailand when you have time off work, and get yourself some precious work experience.

So what variety of job positions can you get in the Land of Smiles? Browsing jobs-quality.com - a site listing jobs around the Bangkok and Chonburi districts of Thailand - they have listed Human Resource work placements, Administration work placements, engineering work placements in Thailand, safety officer job positions etc. Basically the types of job positions you’d find in your home country. While the majority of these placements may be seeking a Thai national who speaks Thai, there are still English-speaking requirements for placements inside many multinational organizations based in Thailand.
