Kitchen counter top ideas

Filed under: Shopping Center, Home Improvement Stuff, Design + Layout — admin at 6:51 am on Monday, May 5, 2008

The kitchen is one place that has to be highly functional. Marble is a stone that if compared with granite, is soft in nature. It is resistant to heat but you will find it almost impossible to remove stains from it. You will also require giving it regular sealing coats so that its beauty sustains. But if your kitchen is an area that is highly in use then slate would be a better option. It is not expensive but uneven surface will be witness, which will lead to uneasy cleaning. After sometime of usage you will see it to be chalky. It also easily scratched and chipped. It can also soak in bacteria because slate is a porous stone.

If you want durability and a stone that can not be scratched or stained this easy, then Corian and Zodiaq are a good choice. These have a beautiful look and appear to be seamless. If talking about beauty, ceramic tiles are very appealing and popular because of hand painting. These are impervious to heat and require little daily carefulness to keep it going. You will find it less expensive if compared with stone materials. But then it has a tendency to get cracked without any difficulty and also you need to seal the grout after installation. To seal it intermittently would be a nice idea to avoid any mess.

So when you are finalizing your kitchen counter top you need to make sure that it’s reliable, impervious to heat and stains. It should also be able to take on the heat of cookware and can be easily cleaned. Also, it can be maintained with ease and comes out to be very functional for you.

What’s Your Design Sign?

Filed under: Home Improvement Stuff — admin at 5:32 am on Tuesday, April 22, 2008

If you’ve been consistently bewildered about how to make your style happen in your home, relax, take a deep breath and forgive yourself. We don’t come into this world with knowledge, we learn as we go!

At first glance, interior design appears to be about the latest trends, beautiful fabrics, furniture or rugs, and the hottest label.

First of all, let me tell you what I’m not going to talk about! I’m not going to talk here about current trends, what’s in, what’s out. I’m not going to show you homes of movie stars or business tycoons. I’m not going to show you rooms and rooms of expensive furniture that you might be able to afford– or not.

So, you won’t find the answer on any TV show, in any magazine or website.

The answer is in you!

After serving over one thousand clients in 25 years, the secret of creating a dream home is– dreaming! So, the first step is knowing what you want.

Experts and authors who talk about goal setting, from Napoleon Hill to Anthony Robbins to Lynne Grabhorn, talk about a FEELING. Yes, written goals are essential, but where does the writing come from? A book? Someone else’s goals? No! They come from YOU! Have you ever really explored what is important to YOU?

From trash to treasure

Here’s an exercise for you to do. It will help you pick your home accessories, but it will also help you find your individual style, your “Design Sign”.

Go up into your attic, rummage through your closets, look under your beds and pull out the things you packed away. Pull them out and lay them on the floor. What items make you feel good, bring you joy that you’d forgotten?

Look through any decorating magazines you have lying around (or any other magazines, for that matter). What images stir your heart, make you smile, and move you? Start clipping pictures and pastingjust a few if you don’t have a lot of time.

As you go about your day, look for things that make you feel good. I’m not talking about expensive things or status items; I’m talking about the simple, subtle images and memories that bring you peace, joy and comfort. Only you know what they are.
These are the things that bring Beauty into your life, not the latest trip to the shopping mall.

Echoes of Childhood Past

Think about the places you lived growing up. If you have pleasant memories, recall them. What gives you a sense of safety, excitement, wonder?

Growing up, I loved to ride horses on our family farm. I liked everything about it: the green fields, the sound of wind in the trees, and yes, even the smell of manure!

So it’s not surprising I live in a bungalow in the middle of horse country. No, it’s not a “McMansion” in a trendy zip code. I moved there because of the feeling of freedom I had when I was a kid.

Believe it or not, your conscious intention to find these things will influence your attention to noticing them!
If this sounds strange, believe me when I tell you I’ve seen stranger things. I have my clients do just these things, and I’ve seen them come alive when they rediscover parts of themselves they had forgotten.

For me, this is the whole point of interior design: creating a home that is warm, expressive, and personal. The first step on the path of self-discovery– before buying anything, or reading anything– is to spend a little time with yourself and those you love.

Good luck and happy decorating!

When Is It Time to Buy New Furniture

Filed under: Home Improvement Stuff — admin at 3:38 pm on Friday, April 18, 2008

When is it time to buy new furniture? Take a look around your
house and ask yourself these questions:

1.Are your sofa or chair cushions showing signs of wear? If it’s
leather, maybe the seat cushions are discolored, lighter in the
seat area than the rest of the sofa or chair. If it’s fabric,
see if the upholstery threads are pulling apart or discolored.
If your furniture is showing signs of wearing, it’s time to
consider new furniture or at least slip covering options.

2.Are there holes in your furniture? You might be able to stitch
or patch the holes if the rest of the piece is structurally
sound. Otherwise, start thinking about new furniture.

3.When you rise from the seat, does the cushion remain sunken?
Check the springs to see if that’s the problem. If a broken or
stretched spring is the culprit, the problem can probably be
repaired, maybe even by yourself if you happen to be handy in
that way. If the springs look okay, maybe you just need a new
cushion. Take a cushion with you to an upholstery shop or fabric
store to show the sales person what kind of cushion you need to
replace the bad one. It’s a good idea to take a good cushion
with you so the sales person can help match the cushion to the
firmness and density you want to replace the bad cushion with.

4.Is the frame of your furniture still in good shape? If a sofa
or chair has been dropped, it might crack a wooden frame. Flip
your furniture upside down and take a look.

5.Does your furniture sit level? If it’s not level, check the
frame. Check the legs to make sure a peg is not missing. If you
can’t spot the problem, it’s time to buy new furniture.

6.When you sit on your furniture, do you feel the arms separate
from the rest of the frame? Maybe you have a problem that can be
solved with wood glue and a few clamps. Otherwise, for safety’s
sake, get rid of your old furniture.

7.When you sit down, do you feel wood or a frame sticking out?
Consider that poke in the behind your official cue to buy new
furniture!

8.If you know it’s time to replace the old look of your
furniture, decide if the update can be done with a simple
slipcover. By measuring the furniture properly, a slip cover -
either purchased ready made or custom made if your furniture has
an unusual shape or curve to it - you can get a nice fit. Slip
covers range in price starting at about $40. The better fabric
you select, the higher the price. If you just want to update
your furniture for a few more months until you save enough money
to buy an all new ensemble, slip covers are the way to go.

9.Look at the finances. Will buying new furniture mean you’ll
have to finance the purchase? If so, can you handle the extra
bill each month?

10.Do you just want to? There’s nothing wrong with “wanting” new
furniture. Look for solid pieces that will give your family many
years of enjoyment and you’ll always be happy with your decision
to buy new furniture!

Lesson 6: How To Create Reciprocal Links On Your Site Reciprocal
links are an essential part to the promotion of your website.
You have a strong site that offers your quality product and you
want people to know about your site. To make sure that you get
the traffic you need, you must have other sites directed toward
yours with links.

This process is fairly simply, but there are many ways to engage
in reciprocal linking.

First, research the sites you might want to link to. You might
start this process by making two lists. First, list the sites
you think your customers might be interested in. For now, just
write, you can consider narrowing your list down at a later
time. Nexte, create a list of sites that would benefit your
site. You can then compare the two lists and see what they have
in common. Compile a list of common subjects, and list out three
key words to fit with each subject. After the research phase,
it is time to go online. Find a meta search engine and input all
three words for each subject. Any site that comes back with all
three keywords should be high on your priority list. Once
you’ve done that, it is time to start sifting through your
results. Bookmark any sites that look promising. When you’ve
made your final choices, it is time to draft a letter to the
webmaster of each site you’re considering. Ge to the point
quickly and sell your site to them. Do not follow up if your
original letter was not responded to. The final step in this
process is to negotiate the link and location in terms of both
sites. As soon as possible, get their link on your site and send
them a note letting them know you have a live link to their
site. Check their site frequently to ensure they are upholding
their promise to you as well.

The next lesson is a practice marketing exercise for you. This
quick read could help you increase your revenue. Be sure to
watch for it!

INSTALLING VINYL REPLACEMENT WINDOWS IN A WOOD FRAME OPENING.

Filed under: Home Improvement Stuff — admin at 8:18 pm on Monday, April 14, 2008

When we left off last week, we had removed the old wood sash
windows and prepared the opening for the vinyl replacement
windows. Now it’s time to install your new windows. You should
have someone there to help you when doing the installation.
First, Remove all shipping materials from the window. Now, if
you are installing several different sizes, make sure you are
putting the correct window in the correct opening. You need to
put the window into the opening to make sure it’s going to fit,
then remove it and run a bead of caulk on the face of the
outside blind stop where the window will rest. You don’t want to
caulk, only to discover the windows are too big. It’s worth the
extra few minutes to make sure it’s going to fit. Lift the
window and set the bottom in first. Then raise the top until it
rests against the outside blind stops. Sometimes, when raising
the top into position, the window frame will hit the top of the
wood frame. You need to tap down on the top of the vinyl frame
while keeping pressure towards the outside.

Once you determine that it’s going to fit, remove the new window
and set it aside. Run a bead of caulk on the face of the outside
blind stops. White latex painters caulk works fine. Raise the
window into position again. Now have your helper hold the window
in position while you raise and lower the sashes, making certain
that the window is square in the opening. Remember how you
ordered the windows 3/16″- 1/4″ shorter than the tightest
measurement? This is where you use this space to adjust the
frame to be the most plumb and level. Get a box of popsicle
sticks and wood coffee stirrers at the grocery store. The coffee
stirrers are about 1/16″ thick, and the popsicle sticks are
approximately twice as thick. You want to put the shims in the
four corners. Then caulk the gap on both sides and along the top
before installing the inside stops. I don’t recommend putting
any screws in the sides, but you can put one screw in the top
center and one in the bottom center. You really dont have to use
any screws in this kind of installation, since the shims will
eliminate any side play, and the caulk on the blind stops will
hold the frame in place as well. Remember, we still need to
re-install the inside stops.

Before installing the inside stops, remove all the old nails and
replace them with new nails. A 1″- 1 1/4″ finish nail is fine.
Before installing the inside stops, scrape all old caulk off the
stops. Then, while your helper holds the window in place, nail
your stops back on. If the window has 4 stops, install the
shortest ones first. That way you can bend the longer stops into
place between the two short ones. Use a nail punch to sink the
head past the surface of the stop. If you have several windows
to do, i suggest doing the first window to this point before
going to the next. How frustrating would it be to have a helper
removing the old sashes, only to discover that the windows
aren’t going to fit!? If the first one goes in fine, then you
can send your helper ahead of you to start removing old sashes.
The best way to avoid the nightmare of having a bunch of new
windows that won’t fit is to make sure you measure CORRECTLY.
Remember, tight minus 1/4″ on the width and height should be
fine.

Finish the inside by caulking the area of the inside stop where
it meets the casing, and the point where the stop meets the new
frame. Fill the nail holes in the inside stops with caulk to
hide the nail heads. Now it’s time to finish the outside. A
quality replacement window will either have a sloped frame to
match the slope sill, or it will come with an insert that fits
under the new frame to fill the gap created by the sloping wood
sill. If you buy a lower grade window that doesn’t come with
anything to fill the gap underneath, you can buy some wood trim
to fill the space, or you can get a flat vinyl trim that
attaches to the face of the bottom of the new frame. The flat
trim is available on my website under the “shop” tab. Once you
cover the bottom gap, it’s time to caulk where the outside blind
stops meet the vinyl frame, and where the bottom gap filler
meets the wood sill.

That’s it! You’re done! You can buy accessories to cover your
old wood sills with a vinyl wrap extrusion. That can also be
found on the website under the “shop” tab. Next week we are
going to start on replacing old aluminum windows.

New BBC Green Website

Filed under: Home Improvement Stuff — admin at 2:33 pm on Saturday, April 12, 2008

BBC Green is the tremendous and sustainable living domain from the BBC Worldwide. The BBC World wide is fully owned through the British Broadcasting Company. The brand makes its money from across a large range of jobs and organisations that are related purely to the BBC’s main output. BBC Greens big objective is to cut through the mystification that these days surrounds environmental and green queries.

The term green is meant to advertise the public to consider about taking a green way to using the natural resources that are positioned all around you. Some interesting examples would be generating and owning solar power. All that might well make a considerable contribution to a sustainable global environment. Both solar panels use energy that is received from the sun to create electricity to run coffee makers and lighting. Solar PV also known as photovoltaic only requires daylight in order to make all of this work; all this is exciting as it conversely means that it could generate some power still on a cloudy day. There are a myriad of benefits to using solar panel system. People can often save up to 190 off your electricity bill also grid connected systems need astonishingly little maintenance. Your PV setups produce absolutely no greenhouse gases and each kWp will probably save in the region of 479g of carbon dioxide emissions per year. This adds up to just about ten tonnes over a systems lifetime. Discover how to use Solar Panels to generate solar energy.

The website is awesome at explaining things and comprises every one of the issues in Household & Gardening Food, Travelling, Lifestyle and Family and Money. What makes BBC Green outstandinding is that the climate change website love to think of themselves as different from every one of the other search domain folk can often have used. The company bid to offer additional relevant results not just from BBC Greens very own global warming site, but also from other sites that look and search on environmental living. When our people run a search you will be taken to a results web page. This web page can often have the primary four hyperlinks for BBC Greens results and for suggested sites results.
