The Legacy of Sailor Jerry

Filed under: History Info, Looking Good, Galleries — admin at 2:33 pm on Wednesday, May 28, 2008

Norman Collins, better known as Sailor Jerry, is considered as the foremost American tattoo artist of his time. He expanded the array of colours available for commercial use by creating his own range of safe pigments. He was the first artists to use single use needles and hospital-like sterilization. He was known not only for his use of colour but also his incredible attention to detail. The riggings in his nautical tattoos were known for their perfect accuracy. Sailor Jerry’s influences ranged from the tough lifestyle of the American sailor, to the mystical curiosity of the Far East. Throughout his life he kept close ties to famous Japanese artists. For Jerry, tattoos were the ultimate rebellion against “the Squares”.

Jerry was legendary for his sense of humour; his “Aloha Monkey” being a famous example of his eccentricity and humour. However, he was also incredibly vocal about professionalism and craft. He taught aspiring artists who he respected and believed had talent. Today well known artists who were some of Jerry’s pupils include Don Ed Hardy, Cliff raven, Don Nolan and Mike Malone whom he left his legacy of Flash designs.

When Sailor Jerry was 19 he enrolled in the US Navy and remained a sailor for the rest of his life. Even when his tattoo career took flight, he continued to work as a licensed skipper on a three-masted schooner which he used to give tours of the Hawaiian Islands. But Jerry was talented on many levels besides his art and his sailing. He was a saxophone player in a dance band for many years and had a night show on KTKG radio where he spoke under the name of “Old Ironsides”. He stopped tattooing in the middle of life due to trouble with the IRS.

Jerry died in 1973 but his legacy has lived on through Mike Malone and Don Nolan, who opened a small independent clothing company in Philadelphia dedicated to the art work of Jerry, and dubbed the company name of Sailor Jerry Ltd. The company is anti-sweatshop and all the clothes are made in America and sold on the internet or at the store in Philadelphia. The store is host to many gigs featuring independent or up and coming bands.

Choosing and Applying Makeup Foundation - A Simple Step by Step Guide

Filed under: Looking Good — admin at 10:54 pm on Tuesday, May 6, 2008

Makeup foundation is the secret to whether your makeup will look good or not.

Foundation helps to smooth out your skin tone, conceal blemishes and gives you a healthier glow. Applying makeup without a foundation base can actually accentuate unsightly skin problems, rather than conceal them. Choosing and applying foundation should be a simple procedure, but there are pitfalls. Here is an easy step by step guide to choosing and applying foundation.

Step 1. Decide what foundation coverage and finish you prefer.

Decide what type of look you would like to achieve. Foundations can offer coverage from sheer to heavy and finishes that range from matte to satin. Degree of coverage and type of finish is very much a personal choice.

Step 2. Choose the right shade

Once you have chosen the ideal formulation (coverage and finish) for you, you’re ready to choose the perfect shade to match your skin tone. There is a good selection of foundation shades available from the lightest of shades for pale skin through to shades for the darkest skin tones. Here’s how to select the perfect shade for you.

How to select the perfect shade

• Ensure you’re in natural daylight when trying out foundation colours, so you can see exactly how your skin will look once you leave the shop.

• Select a couple of shades which look as though they’ll match your skin.

• Don’t try foundation on your hand or on your wrist- they’re a different colour to your face.

• Stroke a little colour onto your jaw line to ensure you get a tone that will blend with your neck as well as your face. The shade that seems to “disappear” into your skin is the right one for you.

Tip: Bear in mind you may need a slightly darker shade of foundation for summer when your face will naturally tan.

Step 3. Moisturise

Begin with clean hands and a clean face. Apply the moisturiser appropriate to your skin type. Let your skin moisturiser for a few minutes, particularly if your skin is oily. Applying foundation to freshly moisturised skin ensures you have a perfect base with which to work. Apply foundation 10 minutes after moisturising. If you don’t allow the moisturiser to absorb into the skin, your foundation could “come off”.

Step 4 Apply concealer

Camouflage any under-eye circles and facial blemishes with concealer. Your concealer should be a slightly lighter tone than your foundation.

Step 5 Apply foundation

When applying foundation use a cosmetic sponge - using your fingertips can result in an uneven, greasy finish. Dampen the sponge first squeezing out the excess moisture - this will make foundation application easier and prevent the sponge from soaking up too much foundation.
Place a small amount of foundation on the back of one hand. Dip your makeup sponge into it. Apply foundation by dotting it on your forehead, cheeks, chin and nose and then blend each one with your sponge. Blend out to your hair and jaw line until the foundation vanishes. Pay special attention to blending around the nose, mouth and jaw line. When applying foundation, slightly rubbing toward the neck area helps create less of a line around the face!

Tip: Be sure to blend, blend, and blend. Special areas to watch are the hair and jaw line. And be sure that your face isn’t one color and your neck another.

Tip: When putting on foundation, always do it in a bright room or by a window. This way, you can see what hasn’t been blended-in properly.

Tip: Many companies have added sunscreens to their foundations, so they’ll protect you from the ageing effects of the sun while you wear them. Look out for the words UV protection and Sun Protection Factor (SPF) numbers on the tube or bottle.

Step 6 Set the foundation with powder

This is an optional step that you may find beneficial. A light brushing of powder on your foundation sets the foundations making it longer lasting. If oil surfaces during the day, blot the area with a tissue then apply a light dusting of powder. Always apply powder to set make-up and reapply throughout the day to prevent shine.

Tip: The light dusting of powder also helps with eye shadow application and also makes the eye shadow longer lasting.

Important! If you want a tanned look, don’t use a darker foundation, use a bronzer.

Body Piercing and What You Should Know

Filed under: Looking Good — admin at 10:53 pm on Sunday, April 13, 2008

Body Piercings are a form of self expression. Many people feel that certain piercings bring out their personality and show thier individuality. Some take body piercings to a religious level stating that body piercings saved their lives. The say this because when Jesus was hung on the cross, nails pierced through his body and that is what held him on the cross. No matter what your reasoning is, there is still some thing you should know and consider before getting any type of body piercing.

Deciding on the type of body piercing you want is the hardest part. Whether it be naval, nose, tongue or genital you need to decide what would be the easiest for you to take care of or which would be the least to notice if you are in a professional field. After you have decided what type of piercing you are going to get, then comes the decision of what piercing studio you are going to get it done at.

When deciding on a piercer and a studio there are certain things you want to look for. One of those above all is cleanliness. Is the area the piercer works in clean and free of any debris or infectious causing materials. You also want to make sure that the utilities used for the piercing are sterile and packaged in the sterilizing materials. You wouldn’t go into a hospital and let a doctor stick you with a needle that he/she just used on the patient before you, would you? So why should it be any different when getting a body piercing? And last but certainly not least, you should see previous work done by the piercer before hand. Find out how many piercing he/she has done. How many have resulted in unsuccessful piercings? Get as much informatino as you can so that you can make the best decision.

Aftercare of your body piercing is very important. You have to make sure you take extra special care of the piercing so that you do not get an infection. Whether it’s a simple nose piercing or the more extreme piercings such as industrials or orbitals, each has just as much important aftercare as the other. Be sure to follow the care instructions given to you by the piercer. If care instructions are not given, ASK!!!!!

Like I stated before, I’m NOT a doctor or a body piercer. I know what I know from others who have experienced it first hand. Here are a few tips for the aftercare of body piercings.

With a tongue piercing, you will use a lot of mouth wash. You want to rinse your mouth out with the mouth wash after meals; if you’re a smoker, after smoking and of course whenever you drink something. It is recommended to not change the piercing for 2 weeks after. You will also want to avoid any kind of deep kissing for about 4-6 weeks.

Nose, Naval & Ear piercings are somewhat easier to take care of. Just wash the area with an antibacterial soap and keep some sort of product like Neosporin on it to keep the area from getting dry.

Some of your daily or recreational activities may have to be changed. For instance, you will want to avoid swimming in a pool or the ocean because you have an open wound. Salt and chemicals could get into the piercing and cause an infections. Be sure to never touch your piercing without washing your hands before and after. Also avoid wearing clothing or other items which may rub or tug on the piercing and cause irritation.

The Kill the Bacterial and Cure the Acne Myth

Filed under: Looking Good — admin at 5:24 am on Saturday, March 29, 2008

All life forms strategize to survive and procreate. Weeds, worms, birds, fungi and bacteria all work to sustain their own lives on this planet. In fact, we humans survive because of the biological games constantly unfolding in our mist.

Propionibacterium acnes, or p acne bacteria, are no different. They want and need to survive. Skin bacteria perform an important function. Bacteria use the secretions of our sweat and sebaceous glands (sebum is the oil that makes our skin look shiny) as nutrients. P acnes that are in balance with your body prevent colonization by more harmful bacteria.

P acne bacteria only encourage acne formations if the production of oil on the face is excessive. This surplus of oil of prompted by hormonal, nutritional, environmental and/or psychological changes in the body. So to prevent acne, you do not what to kill bacteria per se, but keep the amount of bacteria on your skin at an optimal balance. You optimize your oil secretion by understanding and controlling your response to hormonal, nutritional, environmental and/or psychological changes.

If we upset the balance of bacteria in our bodies by taking antibiotics, our resident flora is upset and this enables harmful bacteria (such as Staphylococcus aureus and Acinetobacter baumannii) to colonize our skin. What’s more, antibiotics can destroy the balance of intestinal flora and cause constipation.

In short, using antibiotics on bacteria is a battle amongst intelligent parties involving the bacteria, the body, and the human mind. If we fail to appreciate the bacteria as bodily maintenance workers and continue dousing them with antibiotics, the bacteria just become more resistant to our antibiotics. The bacteria are practiced at playing dead as a tactic for survival. Even people who have used the strongest acne drug on the market, Accutane, have witnessed the cunning behavior of bacteria as zits reappear some months after using this course of acne treatment. These people have discovered that bacteria do not die; they silently and strategically multiply. If you do not want your bacteria out of balance, do not provide them an environment conducive to acne

Beauty To Die For

Filed under: Looking Good — admin at 5:32 pm on Sunday, March 16, 2008

Your medicine cabinet is one of the most dangerous areas of your house, and not for the reasons that you may think. Lurking just behind your bathroom mirror, where all of your favorite beauty products are housed, lays a virtual toxic nightmare. The growing list of synthetic ingredients manufacturers add to their products are turning the most innocent looking shampoos and moisturizers into cocktails of toxins that could cause cancer or reproductive damage over years of sustained use. Modern cosmetics contain a host of dangerous ingredients, which would be more at home in a test tube than in our bodies.

Like most people, you probably assume that the ingredients found in beauty products have been thoroughly tested for safety well before they ever land on your grocery store’s shelves. After all, the government has regulations in place for the water that we drink, the food that we eat and the air that we breathe. One would assume that the FDA would also be overseeing the cosmetic industry to ensure the health and safety of consumers. Unfortunately, the FDA has little power when it comes to regulating the ingredients found in your beauty products. In fact, the only people ensuring the safety of personal care products are the very people who govern the industry: The Cosmetic Trade Association (CTFA). Scientists paid by the CTFA make up the Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel (CIR) and are tasked with regulating the safety of its industry’s own products.

In 2004 the Environmental Working Group (EWG) released the findings of a study that they conducted into the safety of beauty care products. Comparing approximately 10,000 ingredients found in 7,500 different products against lists of known and suspected chemical health hazards, their research revealed that the CIR was falling tragically short in ensuring consumer safety.

Of the 7,500 products tested by the EWG, only a mere 28 had been evaluated for safety by the CIR. The EWG found that 1 in every 120 products analyzed contained ingredients certified by the government as known or probable carcinogens and that nearly 1/3 of all the products contained ingredients classified as possible carcinogens. Astoundingly, 54 products even violated recommendations for safe use that the CIR had set into place, yet these products are still available for sale today.

Of the products tested, the worst offenders were products containing the cancer causing ingredients coal tar, alpha hydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acids and those containing the hormone-disrupting ingredient, phthalate.

Coal Tar
71 hair dye products evaluated were found to contain ingredients derived from coal tar (listed as FD&C or D&C on ingredients labels). Several studies have linked long time hair dye use with bladder cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and multiple myeloma.

A research study conducted in 2001 by the USC School of Medicine found that women using permanent hair dye at least once a month more than doubled their risk of bladder cancer. The study estimates that, “19% of bladder cancer in women in Los Angeles, California, may be attributed to permanent hair dye use.”

A link between hair dye and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma was established in a 1992 study conducted by the National Cancer Institute, finding that 20% of all cases of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma may be linked to hair dye use.

While the FDA has not stepped in to prevent the use of coal tar in beauty products, they do advise consumers that reducing hair dye use will possibly “reduce the risk of cancer”.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) & Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA)
AHA and BHA are commonly used in products advertised to remove wrinkles, blemishes, blotches and acne scars. With consumer complaints of burning, swelling and pain associated with AHA and BHA flooding into the FDA, they began conducting their own research about 15 years ago. Their findings linked the use of AHA and BHA with a doubling of UV-induced skin damage and a potential increased risk of skin cancer.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, skin cancer has reached “epidemic proportions”, with 1 million new cases occurring each year and 1 person dying every hour from the disease. They estimate that at the current rate, 1 in 5 people will develop skin cancer over their lifetime.

The FDA’s study findings were presented to the CIR, but the panel approved the continued use of AHA and BHA, “in spite of serious safety questions submitted by a consumer group and a major manufacturer,” according to an FDA spokesperson.

Even though 1 out of every 17 products analyzed by the EWG study had either AHA or BHA in their ingredients (with nearly 10% being moisturizers and 6% sunscreens), the most that the FDA could do was suggest that products containing the ingredients carry a warning to use sunscreen and to limit their sun exposure while using the product. A puzzling solution, since some of the products containing the dangerous ingredient are designed specifically for use in the sun.

Phthalates
Phthalates are industrial plasticizers widely used in personal care products to moisturize and soften skin, impart flexibility to nail polish after it dries and enhance the fragrances used in most products. Studies indicate that phthalates cause a wide range of birth defects and lifelong reproductive impairments, targeting every organ in the male reproductive system and causing problems ranging from low sperm count to serious genital deformities that can lead to an increased risk of cancer.

While the EWG only found 4 products with phthalate listed as an ingredient (all nail care products), there is no telling how many products actually contain it. The industry is not required to list the ingredients in their fragrances or “trade secret” ingredients on their products and phthalates often fall into one of those two categories.

In September of 2004, the European Union implemented a ban on all beauty products containing phthalates. California Assemblywoman, Judy Chu, has proposed a similar bill (AB 908) to be voted on later this year that would implement the same ban in the US. Opponents to the bill, mainly the CTFA, argue that changing their labeling process would present a huge economic burden and could infringe on trade secrets. A similar bill failed only last year.

4 Steps of Action!
1. Go to www.ewg.com and check out the health risk of your favorite products. EWG has compiled a guide of 7,500 beauty care products and has ranked them according to their ingredients’ potential to cause cancer, trigger allergic reactions, interfere with the endocrine (hormonal) system, impair reproduction or damage a developing fetus.

2. Visit the FDA’s website at www.fda.gov and familiarize yourself with the steps that you can take in order to file complaints or concerns about consumer products.

3. Visit www.safecosmetics.org to learn more about how you can become involved with bill AB 908 to ban phthalates in beauty products in the United States.

4. Check out my recommendations for all natural and safe products for both you and your family at www.scmedicalcenter.com. All products mentioned have been used safely and with wonderful results by my patients for years!

Tithing

Filed under: Looking Good — admin at 9:57 am on Friday, March 14, 2008

Every month I give 10% of the profit from my business to charity. This is not only a moral decision, it’s also a shrewd business decision. In fact, it’s proved to be such a good investment strategy for my business that from 1st January I’m increasing it to 12%.

I originally started giving money to charity because I wanted to do my bit. Then some years ago I decided to formalise this and give 10% of my income each month to charity.

I was amazed that in the few months after I made that decision my income increased dramatically, and I found I appreciated and enjoyed the money I had much more than I’d ever done. I’m not certain of the mechanism, but I think it works a bit like an affirmation: every time I give money in this way I’m saying that I don’t have to worry about money, more will keep coming. Also I know that the more I earn the more other people benefit.

I used to run a workshop for therapists, ‘Managing Your Practice for Success’, and I told people that one of the most important things I felt they could do was to give some of their money away. Some of the participants at these seminars tried it, and it was good to hear that they had the same experience - the amount they had each month had increased significantly since they had made the decision to give some of it away, and they were finding they were less stressed about financial matters generally.

10% may seem a lot if you have little. As you have more, it also seems a lot in an absolute sense. There’s always a good reason not to do it. Although I know it works, I feel a little resistance each month when I do it, but I also get a great glow of satisfaction.

Try adding this to your strategies for achieving financial freedom.

Beauty Tips for Luscious Lips

Filed under: Looking Good — admin at 8:28 pm on Friday, February 29, 2008

The last step in your makeup regime is lipstick application. Some women say if they could have only one beauty item it would be lipstick. Lip color brings the whole look together to create harmony. To keep your lips looking perfect, have lip color with you at all times and reapply when needed.

When you select a lip color take in consideration your clothing and blush colors. The color of your clothing and blush should complement your lipstick but doesn’t have to be perfectly matched. However, the colors should be in the same intensity and range. Wear cool colors together and warm colors together. Pink lipsticks go with blue and pink colors and corals and russets go with clothing that falls in a yellow/orange range.

Steps to apply lip color:

1. Prepare your lips by applying foundation over them (this will extend the wear).

2. Outline and define the shape using a lip pencil that has soft, pointed top. Start at the V in your upper lip drawing down to the corners. Then, starting at the middle of the bottom lip draw a line to the corners. To help lipstick stay on longer, use your pencil to cover the lips entirely.

3. Fill in upper lip with lipstick or you can use a lip brush.

4. Fill in the lower lip and then blot with a tissue and reapply.

5. Dab gloss in the centre of your lower lip to create a fuller more glamorous look.

When defining the lips with a lip pencil be sure the pencil and lipstick colors are very close. The lip liner should not be noticeable. Lip liners are meant to keep your lipstick in place, keep lipstick from bleeding, define the shape and help them look more natural. Do not try to change the shape of your lips by going outside the natural line.

* Dark lipsticks will make small lips appear smaller.

Law of Attraction Article: How to STOP Being a Person Nothing Works For

Filed under: Looking Good — admin at 3:43 am on Tuesday, February 26, 2008

Do you ever wonder why great things happen to some people but not to you?

Do you ever read about people who have tried this or that product and had some incredible result, but when you try it, you don’t get the same result?

Have you become a person who NOTHING seems to work for?

Maybe you’ve thought about trying the some new self- improvement package that sounds great, but you’re just so tired of things not working for you.

Let’s take a look at how you’ve gotten where you are and why these things might happen.

First, at some point, you tried something - either based on a recommendation, a testimonial you read, or some other reason. Basically, you tried it based on someone else’s positive experience.

However, when you tried it, you did not get the same result so you made the assumption that it didn’t work for you. But how true IS this? Often - VERY often - things work differently for different people, and it’s a mistake to judge your life by comparing it with others. Perhaps you just needed more time.

Maybe your circumstances are completely different! Regardless, however, you made up - you CREATED a Truth for yourself at that time, that truth being “This didn’t work”, although remember, that truth is based only on your surface comparison with someone else… and it really doesn’t have anything to do with you, and what - in the cosmic scheme of things - is best for you.

Those results you read about for that other person are what was right at that time for them, and that doesn’t necessarily mean that NOW is the time for you and that it will happen to you the same way that it happened for them!

From then on, every thing else you try is then compared to that first experience, with the Truth in your mind being “Well, it didn’t work that time…let’s see if THIS works”. So again you’re comparing… and not really trying anything “purely” and on it’s own merit without preconceived notions or judgements.

You are already working against yourself! You may not yet automatically expect failure, but you have it as an option, and perhaps even a probability based on your previous experiences.

The more things you try with this mindset, the more you fortify this mindset - it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy that “Nothing works for me”. Before you know it, that is who you become. The person you are about reaching your specific goals or trying this or that product or technology is “It works for others but never for me.” Once you reach that place, it will most certainly become true for you.

So what do you do? How do you break out of this pattern? First, acknowledge how you got here… by comparing yourself or your results with other people who are really on a completely different path then you, although they may have been after similar results. Then create a new idea for yourself - give yourself permission to experience success on your own terms, without judging what happens based on other people or expectations set up by anyone other than yourself.

Once you believe that you deserve to succeed and that you CAN succeed and that you WILL succeed, your life will change. Whatever you try will work for you, because YOU define what “working” is - not somebody else! You set your own timetable, you are relaxed, and non-judgement. Your infinite patience and lack of expectation based externally, will work with you in very powerful ways and you will regain control over your destiny.

What’s the “REAL DEAL” on HGH (Human Growth Hormone) anyway?

Filed under: Looking Good — admin at 9:35 am on Friday, February 8, 2008

Human Growth Hormone was first discovered in 1956 and its structure was identified in 1972. It was extracted from cadavers, sold at very high prices, and injected with needles into the body.

In mid-1998 the 191 chain Hgh molecule was genetically engineered in the laboratory. Since then all HGH is synthetically produced and HGH from cadavers is no longer in use. Synthetic HGH (Somatrophin) is available to us now in two forms. One is through a costly doctor’s pharmaceutical prescription, and secondly at a reasonable price through a homeopathic oral spray. A third therapy alternative would be Secretogogues and Stacked Amino products which contain absolutely no HGH. The idea here is to coax your own body, by stimulating the Pituitary Gland, to produce more of it’s own HGH. Unfortunately this latter therapy works for only a month or two.

It should be noted that the Federal Drug Administration does not allow any nutritional product (HGH pills) to claim that it can “cure” any disease. However, the FDA does approve Pharmaceutical drugs and Homeopathic preparations to claim they can cure a particular disease and the testing to achieve this status is quite rigorous as we all know.

So, a doctor is permitted to prescribe Human Growth Hormone to a patient for anti-aging even though it is approved by the FDA only as a cure for dwarfism. The Pharmaceutical manufacturer is not permitted to suggest it’s use as an anti-aging therapy, only as a treatment for dwarfism, and one company ended up paying substantial fines and penalties for doing just that.

The large majority of Homeopathic remedies do, with FDA approval, claim to cure various ailments. Homeopathic HGH is one of only a handful of preparations that claims to “cure” nothing. 21st Century HGH is manufactured at an FDA monitored and approved laboratory. The curious difference between pharmaceutical HGH (hgh prescription shots) and homeopathic HGH (oral spray) is that even though the former injects huge amounts of the actual hormone, compared to only a miniscule amount in the homeopathic preparation, the rejuvenation levels are remarkably similar!

Being very conservative the idea of stimulating my own body’s production of HGH through nutritional supplements sounded the most “natural” to me. However, the authoritative Physician’s Desk Reference Manual rates different forms of absorption by the body and yields eye-opening information. It says that when you swallow a pill, less than 10% of the nutrient actually gets into the blood stream. The other 90% is processed as waste by the gastrointestinal tract.

Oral absorption through the mucosa (the lining of the mouth) is the preferred choice of medical experts because the body absorbs 90% of the nutrient into the bloodstream. That’s a huge difference. What was not a big difference to us, but was still very interesting, was that oral absorption (90%) was higher than intra-muscular injection (80%).

So, piling a bunch of substances into my body in the form of stacked amino acids and secretagogues, most of which would actually pass through me, just to coax my Pituitary Gland into a little bit of action didn’t seem like a plan to me.

The Human Growth Hormone market is beset by some overzealous marketeers who sometimes make claims that are somewhat misleading, especially in the area of human growth hormone clinical studies. I’ve read through many entire websites which make claims, based on pharmaceutical HGH, that imply the same results will occur with their nutritional product. They are just “fast talking” their clientel and many have had action taken against them by the Federal Trade Commission.

If you are interested in a great rejuvenation therapy stick to either pharmaceutical injections under the care of a doctor or homeopathic oral sprays that can be purchased over-the-counter.
