Recently, a business associate, Mike, mentioned that he was
doing a show at a local university and stopped by the
faculty dining hall to get lunch. He said that, while waiting
on line, the service was poor. The line moved slowly, the
counterperson was disinterested in what she was
doing…and it showed. It was not a pleasant customer
experience.

It was Mike’s turn to order and the counterperson continued
to show her disinterest…no eye contact, moving like it
pained her, and no enthusiasm in her voice. Then when she
finally looked up to give Mike his food, she noticed his
nametag with his name and company. She realized that Mike
worked for a bank where she just opened an account. Well,
she turned into another person. She was excited when telling
Mike about her excellent experience at his bank. In an
instant she was vibrant, alert, smiling, and alive!

The question is, “Why couldn’t she behave that way
whenever she interacts with a customer?” We can ask this
question whenever we interact with people in customer
service situations. In many situations, the persons serving
us act like they are auditioning for the role of a zombie in the
movie, “Dawn of the Dead.” Whereas they can use less
energy being lively and produce a great experience for
everyone involved.

The reason this happens is because the customer service
persons do not “check themselves” for outstanding
customer service. When you “check yourself” before
serving the customer, you prep yourself to give your best for
the customer. When you “check yourself,” you are prepared
for any customer service situation. When you “check
yourself,” you make the situation positive for the customer
and yourself.

The following are three ways to “check yourself” to give
outstanding customer service:

1. Check your Attitude

Make your attitude say, “I can help you today.” This means
that you want to help, you want to take responsibility for the
solution, and you are proactive in creating solutions for the
customer. Make sure your attitude is positive for
outstanding results. Keep a mirror by your desk and look
into the mirror before you start a customer transaction and
say the following:

* “” will help someone today.”
* “I have a great attitude.”
* “I am solution-oriented.”
* “I will make a difference today.”

2. Check your Body Language

Make your body language show that you are eager to listen
to the customer. This means standing or sitting erectly if
communicating face-to-face. Sitting erect in your seat is
especially important when communicating over the
telephone because the customer can “hear” your apathy
over the phone. Check yourself to make sure you are smiling.
Check yourself to make sure your body language is showing
that you want to listen. This means direct eye contact, arms
uncrossed, a slight nod of acknowledgment, and, most
importantly, your body facing the customer to show that you
are completely “engaged” in the conversation.

3. Check your Voice

Make sure your voice is energized and positive. This means
that you do not sound monotone and your voice has vocal
variety (see my article “Cat in the Hat”). Check your voice to
make sure your have a lively pace without cutting off the
customers before they finish their thoughts.

By just applying these three techniques, you will produce
happy customers and make your job as a customer service
expert so much easier.

It sounds too good to be true, but if you’re serious about working from home and you don’t have a lot of money to start than keep reading…

“What IS an Affiliate?”

Basically, an Affiliate is an individual that is willing to market and promote another company in exchange for a commission.

An affiliate is NOT an employee of the company. There are no guarantees of earnings in most cases, and there are various methods of determining payments.

In most cases, the company presents the affiliate with a link to its site that has a special code. When this link is promoted and customers click on that link, the company can trace any sales or leads back to the affiliate. Commissions can be made either way depending on the nature of the business. Good affiliate programs will offer a period of time in which, if the customer does not purchase the first time, but comes back within that period (even through another link) the original affiliate gets the credit.

“How Do I Choose a Program?”

Typing “affiliate program” or “affiliate program directory” into a search engine will give you millions of suggestions. Some directories can give you advice or recommendations. If you are new to affiliate programs, it may be wise to stick with the free applications. Don’t worry, many, if not most, are free to join.

Select a program you are interested in yourself. If feasible, try the product or service personally. It always makes for a better sale if you can give personal testimony to the offer. By typing the words you think a person interested in your product or service would use when searching, you can see how many people have actually searched for it.

“How Do I Promote It?”

2) Determine who your market is…business people? Mothers? Car enthusiasts? Or those interested in health and fitness? Look for forums (public chat areas) or sites that cater to these individuals. Forums are great for connecting with people and building rapport, but be very cautious. Read some of the posts before making one of your own. In many cases there are strict rules about advertising, and you should respect that. View it as a social gathering and keep it light. This is where a personal recommendation would go over much better.

3) Write an article about the topic. A brief article 500-1000 words is perfect. Avoid advertising too blatantly. Some ezine (Electionic Magazine) submission directories will not allow articles that are too obvious. Creating a ‘How To’ or ‘10 Ways to…’ would be a good way to start. You can then either incorporate your affiliate link in the article, or more likely, at the end when you create your author’s credits. Submit your article to ezine directories (try for at least 50). 4) Join a traffic exchange program like TrafficSwarm. You can join for free and create a classified style add with a link to your site. By clicking other people’s links you will collect points. Be very careful to avoid ’spamming’. This means advertising to individuals through their email when they have not given permission. This includes email ‘blasting’ and safelists. This can potentially include newsletters too, so verify their methods of getting subscribers before advertising.

What Affiliate Marketers Want

While I have learned a great deal about SEO on the job, my entree into using SEO as an entrepreneurial pursuit began as an active affiliate marketer.

When I was “between” full- time positions, I signed up for hundreds of affiliate programs, created a tremendous amount of affiliate-related content, and supported my family on what I earned. So, I have gained quite a bit of insight into the do’s and don’ts of successful affiliate program management.

Many affiliate programs treat their affiliates as a “necessary evil” (or worse) instead of a partner with the goal of sales acceleration. Good affiliates who feel mistreated in any fashion will, without the slightest hesitation cease promoting the offending merchant which directly affects the merchant’s bottom line.

So, here’s my list of what Affiliate Marketers are looking for in a relationship with an Affiliate Program.

Be paid. Obviously.

Be paid on time. If there is a problem with paying on time, please give as much advance notice as possible that there is a problem.

Don’t work with “parasites”. Many affiliate programs “unwittingly or not” work with outfits that steal affiliate commissions by overwriting affiliate cookies and installing popups / spyware that poach sales from the affiliate that should have earned them. Knowledgeable affiliates won’t promote products that are affiliated with “parasites”.

Sometimes, affiliates will inadvertently do something that the merchant might not agree with. As a newbie affiliate, I happened to innocently mention a competitor company while promoting an affiliate product. I unknowingly broke a program rule…and the first e-mail from the affiliate manager not only terminated my participation with the program but threatened me with legal action. Perhaps, he could have just asked me to nicely change the content on the page? Appropriate and effective communication is critical to being a successful affiliate manager and to inspire affiliates to sell on your company’s behalf.

If the affiliate is performing well, be proactive with him / her. Raise the commission without asking. Send a gift. Don’t wait for the affiliate to come to you asking for an increased payout. Motivate the affiliate to go the extra mile for you for he /she is making sales on your company’s behalf that you wouldn’t otherwise make.

The personal touch is nice…and I mean a phone call, not an e-mail. Of all the programs I’ve worked with, only one program contacts me via telephone on a regular basis. The call is placed not by the “affiliate manger”, but the president of the company. And, I get calls every few months no matter my current level of production on their behalf. I guarantee that I make an extra effort on behalf of this program just because of how well they treat me.

I can count the number of affiliate managers that have phoned me for a “non-problem” on one hand. And there is a program that I promote heavily (because it pays and converts well) where the ONLY communication that I’ve ever received from the program is the monthly check. No other communications of any sort. Even when they have new products, they don’t tell me…I need to explore the affiliate backend to find out about them.

Shawn Collins of Affiliatetip.com, who was one of the best affiliate managers I’ve ever worked with, said this in a recent article, “Some people are saying that affiliate marketing is experiencing a Renaissance, but that suggests that there was a time when affiliate programs were not working. From where I sit, the affiliate landscape has been in a crescendo for 10 years.”

The affiliate marketing model works well because there are people out there who are able to generate targeted web traffic and funnel that traffic to merchants in exchange for a percentage of the sale. Seasoned, experienced affiliate marketers will generate revenue for whichever programs they are promoting. If they are treated well by a merchant, they will exert more effort on that partner’s behalf, increasing their bottom line sales. With billions of websites around the world, about 16 million of
them are ranked on Alexa.com, and I believe only the sites that

Many believe that starting their own business online is easy

Backend Sales Mean Exponential Profits

If you’re unsure what backend sales are, let me explain it this
way. All of your customers are new customers at some point. New
customers are expensive to come by. A backend sale is when you
sell an existing customer another one of your products. When you
sell a customer Widget A, it’s a lot cheaper and requires a lot
less effort to sell that same customer Widget B than it is to
sell a new customer Widget A. But more importantly, you now have
a captive audience to begin backend sales, which will grow your
profits quite handsomely.

You do not have to have multiple products when you launch your
first website, but you should already have a second product in
mind.

Once you have built a list of loyal customers with your first
product, you will then be ready to release your second product.
You can email your list announcing your second product and
profits will roll in all at once!

Many marketers will break even or lose money on their initial
product so they can build a large list of loyal customers. They
understand that backend sales are where empires are built.

I would like to illustrate the power of backend sales by giving
you the following example: You have a product that you will sell
for $97.00. Each week you make 5 sales. In six months you will
have made 130 sales for a total of $12,610. Then you launch a
second product for $149.00 for 2 days only. If only 20% of your
customers buy your second product, you will make 26 sales for a
total of $2,522.00…in only 2 days! You could, of course,
repeat this process as often as you like.

If you’re a beginner to Internet marketing, you must concentrate
on your first product and getting it out there. Just be sure you
understand the concept of backend sales and prepare to take
advantage of this profit-making machine.

The last few weeks have been taken up with preparations for the launch of my latest online venture.

You may recall in a recent email how I started to dabble in affiliate reselling and met with immediate and albeit unexpected success.

Now I am taking the experiment a quantum leap forward with the launch of a portal website featuring 12,000+ ClickBank products plus a sprinkling of the best of the latest affiliate reselling opportunities.

I have already tweaked the system so that at will I can do an instant makeover of the 12 featured products.

For a month I shall leave them as they are to monitor returns.

Thereafter I shall rotate these from a choice of 100 alternatives
